In Călărași, culture and the Danube landscape can be seen as two distinct aspects of a stay. Muzeul Municipal Călărași is housed in a historic building; Muzeul Dunării de Jos focuses on archaeology, its treasury and regional crafts. On the water, boat trips offer views of the banks of the Danube, while five cycling tourism routes explore the area’s built and natural heritage. You can therefore plan your stay around architectural history, crafts, cycling or the water.

Museums: architectural history and regional themes

Muzeul Municipal Călărași is housed in a historic building constructed in 1886–1887 to plans by architect Ion Socolescu. In September 2014, the building was inaugurated as the museum’s home. Its construction and subsequent use as a museum are two distinct chapters in the building’s history.

The exhibition “Gospodăria țărănească la Dunărea de Jos” at Muzeul Dunării de Jos showcases local occupations, customs and regional crafts such as weaving, pottery, woodworking and fishing. You can choose a cultural focus based on your interests: Muzeul Municipal highlights architectural history, while this exhibition presents local activities and customs.

The Archaeology and Treasury section at Muzeul Dunării de Jos is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 09:00 to 17:00. Last admission is at 15:30 on weekdays and 16:30 at weekends. In both time slots, last admission is half an hour before closing. Check the opening hours before you travel.

The Danube, promenade and beach

The Brațul Borcea near Călărași offers opportunities for boat trips and views of the landscapes along both banks of the Danube. A leisure boat route on the Danube starts at a landing stage in Parcul Central; check before travelling whether it is operating. The park also features a Danube promenade with benches, sunshades, trees, young ornamental shrubs and floral displays.

Plaja Mare (Samskara) is a natural beach accessible from Parcul Central by catamaran, boat or motorboat. Check access arrangements before setting out, as they may change. Parcul Central is therefore both a reference point for the leisure boat route and the starting point for the connections to the beach mentioned above. Views of the riverbanks are the main attraction at Brațul Borcea, while Plaja Mare is a beach destination.

Five cycling tourism routes

Five cycling tourism routes start from Călărași and explore the area’s built and natural heritage. Cycling offers a different way to experience the landscape from a boat trip, which provides views of both banks of the Danube. Route conditions and signage may change; check both before setting out.
