A former border regiment building dating from 1770, an ethnographic open-air section in the courtyard and a literary museum with translations into more than twenty languages give Năsăud a clear cultural focus. The Someșul Mare Superior protected area, which partly lies within the city limits, adds to this. When choosing a hotel in Năsăud, the first consideration is therefore whether your stay will focus mainly on cultural sites or also on the river and landscape.

Border History and Rural Material Culture

The building of the Muzeul Grăniceresc Năsăudean, also known as “Şvarda,” was the former barracks of the II Romanian Border Regiment. It was built in 1770 and is considered a historic monument. The history of the site is thus directly tied to its former function as barracks.

In the courtyard, an ethnographic open-air section completed in 2010 adds to the exhibition. It includes a farmhouse from Ilva Mare, a draw well, a large press for grape must and oil, a cart, a sled, a courtyard gate and a boundary stone. The objects bring together different aspects of rural material culture: the house and well, equipment for making grape must and oil, and the cart and sled sit alongside the courtyard gate and boundary stone. Thus, the history of the border regiment and a collection of ethnographic objects meet in the same museum.

Liviu Rebreanu: Life and Work

The Muzeul Memorial „Liviu Rebreanu” displays the writer’s personal belongings and photographs. They document his life from his youth through his final year, 1944. A permanent book exhibition covers his complete works, including numerous translations into more than twenty foreign languages. Biographical records and literary works are thus presented side by side.

The memorial museum opened on June 2, 1957, in a house built to the floor plan of the former house in Prislop, where the writer’s parents lived. The museum stands on the edge of the village, on the side facing Năsăud. You can take this location into account separately when planning, rather than simply treating it as another stop in the town center.

Churches and Cultural Traces Through Time

The Orthodox “Sf. Nicolae” Church stands in the center of Năsăud, on the eastern side of the central market square. It dates from 1880 to 1884 and is listed as a historic monument under code BN-II-m-B-21123. The Roman Catholic “Sf. loan Nepomuk” Church in Năsăud dates from the second half of the 18th century. Visitors interested in the churches as historic sites can thus take in two distinct periods of construction.

Cultural milestones also extend beyond individual buildings: the “Someşana” folklore ensemble was founded in 1963. The 2023 edition of Maialului Elevilor Năsăudeni included a parade in traditional costumes.

The Someșul Mare River Corridor

The ROSCI0232 Someșul Mare Superior site of community importance is located in Bistrița-Năsăud County, in the northeastern part of the Transylvanian Depression. As a continuous area, it stretches along the Someșul Mare corridor between Năsăud and Ilva Mică; parts of it lie within the city limits of Năsăud. The protected area includes sections of the low-water and flood channels, the floodplain and the slopes. Its landscape is defined by more than the course of the river: the floodplain and hillsides are also part of this natural area. For travelers, this adds a river-focused perspective on the area around the museums and churches.

Getting There and Planning

Năsăud’s intermodal transport hub is located near the train station and adjacent bus station. Check the relevant timetables for your travel dates. When planning, you can focus on the town’s history, literary collections and churches as cultural themes, and consider the river corridor as a separate landscape feature.
