Zagra brings together Roman archaeological sites, wooden churches, local customs and the Lacul Zagra nature reserve. It is also connected to the ČibleČ Mountains region. When planning a trip and looking for a holiday rental, it is worth distinguishing Zagra itself from its immediate surroundings and the wider mountain landscape. Its distinctive features are spread across different places and scales. You can choose to focus on cultural history, nature or the regionâs mountain setting.
Comparing Roman sites
The Roman watchtower âTurnul de epocÄ romanÄ de la Zagra â Dealul Lupuluiâ is about 800 metres southeast of Zagra, in the forest on MÄgura Lupului, on the west bank of the Valea Lupului stream. Another Roman watchtower stood near Zagra, at Vârful ZgÄului, in a prominent position. From there, the view extended across the ČibleČ Valley and north almost to the foothills of the ČibleČ Mountains.
The Roman watchtower near PeriČor was also in the vicinity of Zagra, at the highest point of the Vârful Colnicului plateau. From there, it offered an excellent view east across the ČibleČ Valley. The viewing directions differ: from Vârful ZgÄului, the view extended north, while from Vârful Colnicului, it extended east. Those interested in the areaâs Roman past can therefore explore two distinct topographic settings.
Wooden churches with their own architectural histories
The âBiserica de pe Podâ was originally built in PeriČor. In 1936, the church was moved to Zagra and rebuilt there. The wooden church âCuvioasa Paraschivaâ also has distinctive architectural features: the narthex and altar apse are pentagonal and polygonal in design, while the tower roof is octagonal. Paintings remain in the narthex and nave, although they are damaged. The combination of unusual floor-plan shapes and surviving wall paintings makes the building an interesting example of local wooden architecture.
Lacul Zagra: origins and nature
Lacul Zagra is a natural reservoir. It formed after a landslide shifted sedimentary rocks on the southern slope of Dealul Comoara and blocked springs in the area. Dealul Comoara lies east of the commune of Zagra. The lake is also known as âTÄul lui Alacâ and is designated a botanical nature reserve; it lies about 500 metres from the village. Its name, geological origins and protected-area status offer several distinct ways to explore the natural environment.
The European pond turtle and the long-tailed turtle are found in Lacul Zagra; both species are protected by law. This connects the lakeâs landscape and geological history with a specific nature topic. Learning about the protected species adds to an understanding of the area, without requiring you to see the animals in person.
The ČibleČ Mountains as a regional setting
The peaks of ČibleČ, Bran and Arcer are part of the landscape around Zagra. The highest peak is ČibleČ, at 1,839 metres. The ridges are mostly covered with beech and coniferous forests, with alpine pastures above them. These details describe a wider landscape, not individual locations within the village. From Mocod, access to the ČibleČ Mountains follows the county road through Zagra, Poienile Zagrei and Suplai. If you plan to use this road, check current road conditions before setting out.
Customs and traditional crafts
Local customs in Zagra include singing Christmas and New Yearâs songs. The folklore heritage of Valea ZÄgrii also includes the traditional forms âCununa grĂŽuluiâ and âSâmbra oilorâ. They add a cultural perspective on the area to its architectural and landscape features. Historically, Zagra was also known for the skilled crafting of Cergi and PÄnuri. This craft tradition is part of the villageâs past.
Choose accommodation to suit your plans
Churches and customs give the village a cultural focus; the nature reserve is nearby, while the ČibleČ Mountains form the wider regional landscape. Choosing accommodation based on the destinations you actually plan to visit can help you decide how to balance trips to the village with your regional interests.
