On a trip to Moneasa, springs and mountain scenery go hand in hand with a distinctive spa history. The town lies at an elevation of almost 300 m at the foot of the Codru-Moma Mountains and has been known since the 16th century; its mesothermal springs are particularly prized. In 1886, Moneasa was granted spa status by the Imperial Ministry of the Interior in Vienna. The mineral water is rich in bicarbonate, calcium and magnesium. If you are looking for accommodation in Moneasa, you can first consider whether water and nature experiences or cultural history should be the focus of your trip.

Thermal waters and scenery

The three pools at Aqua Ștrand Moneasa are supplied with thermomineral water that emerges from the spring at 31 °C. Opening hours may vary by season. If you are planning to visit the Ștrand, check in advance whether its seasonal opening schedule matches your travel dates.

With its large, terraced quarry face, the black-and-red marble quarry makes a striking sight. From the access area to the quarry, the viewpoint can be reached via a trail about 200 m long, marked with double white and red circles. As trail conditions may change, check the latest situation before setting out.

Peștera ā€žGrota Ursuluiā€ contains real cave bear fossils (Ursus spelaeus). A 200-metre-long, fully electrified section of the cave is accessible only on guided tours led by experts. Check tour arrangements before your trip if you would like to visit the cave section. The two references to 200 metres mean different things: at the viewpoint, the figure refers to the approximate trail length; inside the cave, it refers to the length of the electrified section.

Culture and history

The village museum houses a collection of old objects arranged to recreate a traditional household: tools, furniture, vessels, newspapers and traditional costumes. The reconstruction gives the different objects a shared setting.

The Orthodox hermitage ā€žSfinții Apostoli Petru și Pavelā€œ stands on a gently rising hill in the heart of the spa town. The CzĆ”rĆ”n-Gyula monument commemorates his passion, courage and generosity, through which he advanced tourism in the Apuseni Mountains.

Another layer of history is represented by the ruins of the iron smelting furnace. They are important evidence of the intensive iron processing carried out in the Sebiș–Moneasa sector during the 18th and 19th centuries. Moneasa thus brings together religious heritage, memories of tourism development and the region’s industrial history.

The ā€žParada Clătitelorā€œ festival has been a tradition in Moneasa for two decades. It is held annually and attracts thousands of visitors from several counties; visitor numbers and specific dates may vary. If the festival is a key part of your trip, check the dates in advance.
