Church history and archaeological sites offer different historical perspectives in Șagu. The Cabana Deltei Hotel-Restaurant is a practical reference point when planning accommodation. Șagu’s historical connections span finds from the Late Bronze Age, medieval church ruins, and architectural and artistic landmarks from the 18th and 20th centuries.

Accommodation and Road Connections

The Cabana Deltei Hotel-Restaurant is located on the DN 69 at the entrance to Șagu, on the left when travelling from Arad toward Timișoara. It has 14 rooms and a restaurant with 90 seats. The capacity figures refer to different areas: rooms describe the accommodation, while seats refer to the restaurant. The DN 69 is the municipality’s main transport connection, linking it with Arad and Timișoara. The DJ 682 G connects Șagu with Cruceni and continues via the DJ 682 A toward Firiteaz. The destinations mentioned are therefore served by two road connections: Arad and Timișoara along the DN 69, and Cruceni and Firiteaz via the DJ connection.

Churches and Historical Layers

Following the German colonization of 1770, the settlement of Șagu experienced renewed growth. As part of the redevelopment after 1770, a new Catholic church was built in the centre. The first Orthodox church in Șagu was built on the ruins of a medieval Catholic church. On 14 October 1994, Patriarch Teoctist consecrated the Orthodox church together with Nicolae, Metropolitan of Banat, and Timotei, Archbishop of Arad. Between 1982 and 1986, Mihail Bălășescu painted frescoes on the walls of a church in Șagu. Chronologically, these details span the medieval church ruins, the redevelopment after 1770, the fresco work, and the 1994 consecration.

Archaeological Sites and Landscape

The Șagu-Sit A1_1 archaeological site lies on the first terrace of a former riverbed or branch of the Mureș River. It is 200 metres south of the midpoint between Șagu and Cruceni, beside the road connecting the two places. The 2010 preventive excavation covered almost three hectares and yielded evidence from the first phase of the Late Bronze Age. Two location references are significant for the Șagu-Vest site: 1.23 kilometres northwest of the Orthodox church in Șagu and 420 metres southeast of the left bank of the Valea Viilor stream. The sites therefore also differ in their geographical reference points: the former river course and the road between Șagu and Cruceni for the first, and the Orthodox church and the Valea Viilor stream for the second.

The settlements in Șagu Municipality are located in the Câmpia Vingăi, part of the Câmpia Tisei. The recurring local Ziua Comunei Șagu festival also provides a date-specific point of reference: the 2026 edition was the twelfth, and by then the festival was already considered a tradition. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.
