Stremț Commune offers a range of points of interest for trip planning, from landscapes and traditional handicrafts to cultural history. The village of Stremț lies in the lower reaches of the Geoagiu Valley, 4 km from the town of Teiuș. Nature-related themes range from the limestone ridge to the floodplain, while cultural themes span the ethnographic exhibition and the history of architecture and faith.

Limestone Ridge and Floodplain

The western limestone ridge of the commune reaches 1,150 metres at Vârful Prisecii. Saxicolous plants—that is, plants adapted to rocky habitats—grow on the limestone. These include Saxifraga paniculata, Asperula capilata and Dianthus spiculifolius. The species named here illustrate the botanical significance of the limestone ridge. A different natural feature is the floodplain of the lower Stremț Valley, where northern duck species such as Bucephala clangula and Clangula hyemalis occur in autumn and occasionally in winter. The botanical and zoological points of interest differ by habitat and season: autumn and, occasionally, winter are the relevant seasons for the ducks mentioned, while the plants are associated with the limestone ridge.

Handicrafts at the Ethnographic Exhibition

The Stremț ethnographic exhibition is located in the cultural centre next to the library; visits are possible on request. Its most significant exhibit is the traditional women’s and men’s costume. The exhibition also documents traditional weaving and the processing of wool, hemp and flax. Traditional wooden furniture includes a peasant bed, a table and benches. A loom illustrates its seasonal use. The exhibition brings together different aspects of traditional handicrafts: materials and processing techniques are presented alongside clothing and furnishings. This offers a range of ways to explore everyday culture, from textile work to furniture.

Cultural Route and Architectural History

The Drumul Icoanei cultural route connects Alba Iulia, Teiuș, Stremț, Geoagiu de Sus and Valea Mănăstirii. Its focus is the importance of faith in the lives of Romanians in Transylvania and the artistic expression of Romanians. Stremț was first recorded in 1332 under the name sacerdos de Kyod “Dyod”. The rectangular ground plan of Cetatea Diodului is considered unusual in Transylvania. In Geoagiu de Sus, the bishop’s church dates from the 16th century; the more recent of its two layers of frescoes is dated 1724. These historical points of interest range from the documented history of the name to architecture and fresco painting.

Annual Cultural Events

Festivalul Cânepii is held annually in August and promotes customs and handicrafts related to hemp cultivation. Sărbătoarea Fii satului is a cultural and artistic gathering held annually in every village in the commune. Their focus differs: the festival centres on hemp cultivation and the customs and crafts associated with it, while Fii satului has a cultural and artistic character and takes place in the individual villages. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific event date in advance.
