Iglesia San José faces its main entrance toward the sunrise; only two other churches in Puerto Rico share this orientation. Nearby, La Soplaera offers a different way to experience Peñuelas: waterfalls, a river and natural pools. Church architecture, local history and landscape give the destination its distinct facets.

Church Architecture and Traces of the Past

The Museo de la Historia Ramón Rivera “Bonyé” preserves historical objects, artifacts and documents from pre-Columbian and colonial times. At the northwest corner of Plaza de Recreo stands an old locomotive that transported sugar cane to Hacienda Dolores La Negra Cocola and the surrounding area. The museum spans several historical periods, while the locomotive tells the story of a specific transportation task.

La Soplaera and the Water Landscape

La Soplaera is located on the Río Guayanés in the Jaguas neighborhood of the municipality of Peñuelas. The landscape includes waterfalls with crystal-clear water and natural pools. The contrast with Iglesia San José is clear: there, the orientation of the main entrance is its distinguishing feature; here, it is the interplay of river, waterfalls and pools.

Cays and Water Activities

The uninhabited cays of Cayo Parguera, Cayo Río, Cayo Caribe, Cayo Palomas and Cayo María Langa lie near Peñuelas. They can be reached by boat and explored during the day. Check access conditions before planning your visit.

Kayaks can be rented near Peñuelas for paddling on the water and observing marine life and birds. As availability may change, check rental options before making plans. Cays and kayaks offer different ways to discover the area from the water: exploring the uninhabited islets, or paddling while watching marine life and birds.

Archaeological Perspectives in Puerto Rico

The wider destination of Puerto Rico also includes archaeological sites elsewhere on the island, such as Parque Ceremonial Indígena Caguana in Utuado and Centro Ceremonial Indígena de Tibes in Ponce. These places broaden the view of Puerto Rico’s cultural heritage, but they are not attractions in Peñuelas.

At the center of Parque Ceremonial Indígena Caguana are several ceremonial spaces known as bateyes. Ceremonies, dance rituals and ball games called batos were once held there. The park is considered one of the most significant Taíno archaeological sites in the Antilles. On display are petroglyphs, pottery pieces and other limestone artifacts made by the Indigenous population in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Centro Ceremonial Indígena de Tibes in Ponce is considered a significant Taíno archaeological site on Puerto Rico’s south coast. Its museum displays weapons, ceramic artifacts and figures representing deities, known as cemíes. The focus differs between the sites: Caguana centers on the bateyes and their former use, while Tibes presents archaeological finds and representations of deities in its museum exhibition.
