Carolina, Puerto Rico, brings together nature, city and culture for trip planning: Balneario de Carolina, a protected marine area, forest reserves and historic sites. When searching for hotels in Carolina, you can first consider whether you want to focus on nature, a guided tour or architectural history.

Nature in Carolina

Balneario de Carolina has extensive parking, toilets, showers, as well as access points and facilities for people with physical disabilities. Before your trip, check the current accessibility information with the municipality.

Reserva Marina de la Isla Verde is a protected marine area off the coast of Carolina, in front of Punta del Medio, which separates Carolina’s two beaches. The reserve is home to manatees, sea turtles, corals, algae, moray eels, eels, rays, lobsters, octopuses and crabs, among other species.

Reserva Forestal Barrazas contains more than 10,000 valuable hardwood trees, including teak and mahogany. This number may change over time. The marine reserve and forest reserve offer different attractions: one is a habitat for the marine organisms mentioned above, while the other is defined by its valuable hardwood trees.

Tours of the City and Nature

Carolina desde Adentro offers guided tours of Carolina. The route runs from the tourist area to CorazĂłn Centro Urbano. For a different focus, a nature tour in Carolina can include one of the forest reserves or Reserva Marina de la Isla Verde, as well as boat trips on Canal Blasina and Laguna Torrecilla.

The tours therefore differ in both subject matter and the routes described: Carolina desde Adentro takes you through Carolina from the tourist area to CorazĂłn Centro Urbano; the nature tour may include a forest or marine area and boat trips. This lets you weigh a guided city tour against a nature tour with potentially different components when planning your trip.

Architecture and Exhibitions

Antigua Casa Alcaldía was built in 1930 in the Spanish Revival style, based on a design by Puerto Rican architect Rafael Carmoega. Its corner tower was inspired by the Giralda in Seville. In 1984, the relevant historic preservation institutions declared the building a national historic landmark. Its date of construction, architectural style, tower and landmark status offer different ways to understand the building’s historical and architectural significance.

Museo del Niño de Carolina features 103 exhibits where children can learn new things and test their abilities. Art, science, technology and the environment come together there. While Antigua Casa Alcaldía represents historic architecture, the museum brings together several fields in its exhibits. This makes it possible to distinguish between architectural history and a broader range of exhibits when choosing cultural sites.
