Calde offers different perspectives on culture and landscape: the linen-making tradition of Várzea de Calde, trails along the Ribeira da Várzea and ornate gilded woodwork in the Antiga Igreja Paroquial. For planning your trip, you can therefore choose between craft traditions, sacred furnishings and routes through rural areas.

Linen culture from sowing to weaving

“Produção e Transformação do Linho de Várzea de Calde” takes place throughout the year in several stages. The practice runs from sowing to weaving, bringing together different phases of work. Each of these phases also has a rich and extensive repertoire of songs. The songs are associated with the individual steps in linen production and processing, giving the tradition a musical dimension alongside its craftsmanship.

On 3 February 2023, “Produção e Transformação do Linho da Várzea” was added to Portugal’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. During scheduled visits to the Museu do Linho de Várzea de Calde, local linen artisans can be invited to demonstrate and explain individual stages of processing live. If you would like to experience such a demonstration, it is best to check with the museum in advance whether one can be arranged for your visit.

Trails along the Ribeira da Várzea

The Barragem de Várzea de Calde is located on the Ribeira da Várzea and was completed in 2000. On the Rota da Ribeira de Várzea, you pass two well-equipped picnic areas on your way to the Barragem de Calde. The route combines a landscape trail with places to take a break; the picnic areas are a practical point of reference if you want to plan your exploration around not only the distance but also a possible rest stop.

The PR1 VIS – Rota da Ribeira de Várzea is 8.8 kilometres long and starts and ends in Várzea. It follows a levada (irrigation channel) as well as rural and forest tracks. The length and character of the route give you two different points of reference for planning: the stated distance and the landscapes it passes through.

Another option is the short circular route “Stories and Generations in the Geology of Calde”. It leads to the necropolis of Laginha. The routes differ in the features mentioned here: the PR1 focuses on its length and types of path, while the short circular route is centred on its destination at the necropolis. This lets you weigh up a route with a specified distance against a circular walk with a named cultural destination when planning your time in Calde.

Sacred art and pilgrimage route

The Antiga Igreja Paroquial de Calde features ornate gilded woodwork inside. This offers a distinct cultural focus alongside the textile tradition: while linen-making involves several stages of work and an associated repertoire of songs, the church’s particular attraction is its gilded interior.

The Caminho Português Interior de Santiago also connects the region to the pilgrimage route. The section within the municipality of Viseu stretches for about 40 kilometres and runs mostly through rural areas. These details describe the route at the scale of the municipality. Together with the trails near Várzea and the circular route to the necropolis, the pilgrimage route offers another way to include rural trails in your travel plans.
