The PR17 gives a stay in Povolide a clear focus: this 9.5-kilometre circular walk combines rural and historical character. It also takes in manor houses, old wells and other traces of the parish’s history. If you enjoy walking and are interested in cultural heritage, you can combine the route with these discoveries.

PR17: a loop through the cultural landscape

The PR17 is marked in both directions according to the standards of the Federação de Campismo e Montanhismo de Portugal. Its circular route returns to the car park opposite the Igreja Paroquial de Povolide, where the trail begins and ends. There is a small fountain and picnic tables there; check on site before setting off whether these facilities are available. The route’s length gives you a concrete basis for planning the loop as a separate item in your day’s itinerary.

Along the way, the trail passes through fields bordered by old walls made from stacked granite stones. Numerous broad-canopied oak trees are also part of this landscape. The stone walls and fields make the route’s rural character tangible; the historical stops add a cultural perspective to the walk.

Manor houses, wells and historical traces

The PR17 passes the Casa Francisco Diogo Lopes Júnior. The house is an architectural example of an old landowning family line associated with rural life. The route also leads to Quinta do Paço, considered an exceptional manor house, and the centuries-old spring of Casal de Além. The Chafariz do Eirô was built in 1831.

Towards Outeiro de Povolide, the PR17 passes a former prison and a Poldra that is now little used. These stops are also among the route’s various historical points of interest. They give the walk a different character from a loop focused solely on the landscape.

The Igreja Paroquial de Povolide, opposite the start-and-finish car park, is a religious heritage building of the parish. Another historical remnant is the Pelourinho de Povolide: the only surviving fragment that can still be identified is a shaft section, reused as the base of a stone table at Largo da Capela de Povolide. The Pelourinho was restored in 2017.

Rural character and local history

The green natural landscape of the parish of Povolide includes orchards, vineyards and agricultural estates. Various manor houses shape the area and reflect its historical development. Rock-cut tombs are also part of the parish’s history. If you are interested in the connection between landscape and cultural heritage, these offer further insights beyond the PR17 into the features that define Povolide.

Quinta da Igreja, a family farm with a cheese dairy in Povolide on the edge of the demarcated area for Queijo da Serra, offers another local perspective. As part of certain experiences, you can learn how to make cheese there. Check before your trip whether this experience is available for your dates.
