A traditional two-arch bridge connects the banks of the Cabrum at an altitude of around 1,000 metres: the Ponte da Panchorra makes it clear at a glance just how diverse the discoveries in Resende can be. Romanesque buildings, trails through the Montemuro landscape, cherry culture and experiences on the Douro sit side by side here. The bridge is one of four places in Resende that are part of the Rota do Românico.

Romanesque Architecture and History in Resende

The route also includes the Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Cárquere and the churches of São Martinho de Mouros and Santa Maria de Barrô. At São Martinho de Mouros, visitors can discover a 13th-century Romanesque church with an unusually articulated, imposing façade. Inside are paintings from the workshop of the Mestres de Ferreirim, a main altar in the national style and a hagiographic ceiling.

Santa Maria de Barrô offers a different architectural accent: the church is a late Romanesque building on the left bank of the Douro. Its foundation may date back to the 12th century. At the Ponte da Panchorra, meanwhile, the two arches and the crossing over the Cabrum shape the view. The three structures illustrate the different ways church and bridge architecture appear at the Resende stops on the Rota do Românico.

The Museu Municipal de Resende also tells the story of a specific place: it is housed in the former prison building. Its four permanent exhibition rooms focus on archaeology, ethnography, the Douro, and Edgar Cardoso and his bridges on the Douro. The Centro Interpretativo de Montemuro offers another perspective on the built and natural heritage, presenting both of these themes of the Serra de Montemuro.

Trails through Montemuro and along the Douro

The Grande Rota de Montemuro runs for 57 kilometres through the Serra de Montemuro; a 13.9-kilometre variant leads to Resende. The route passes Lagoa D. João and Porto de Rei on the banks of the Douro. A hiking project also includes an 80-kilometre route from Nespereira in Cinfães to the Parque Fluvial de Porto de Rei in Resende. Three additional hiking trails are signposted in the Município de Resende: PR de Felgueiras, PR do Vale do Cabrum superior and PR da Lagoa D. João.

Cyclists will also find a selection of routes at the Centro Cyclin’Portugal de Montemuro: nine circuits cover 122 signposted kilometres and 302 available kilometres. The center’s main access point in Resende is in Felgueiras; there is an additional access point in Feirão. Further into the Serra de Montemuro, the focus is on active bogs as well as natural heritage. The mountain range is part of Portugal’s Natura 2000 network and is one of the last refuges south of the Douro for the endangered wolf.

Cherry Blossoms and Local Experiences

The Rota dos Cerejais is a circular hiking trail that begins and ends in Senhora da Guia. It passes through rural hillsides along the Douro, which are blanketed in white blossoms during cherry blossom season. On the Rota das Cerejeiras em Flor, a specialist explains the cherry’s development cycle to visitors. Those interested in the fruit and its cultivation can visit the Centro Interpretativo da Cereja, which has a permanent exhibition and an orchard with several cherry varieties; it also offers views of the Serra do Marão and the Douro.

The Rota das Cerejas de Resende combined a train journey with an exclusive programme related to the cherry festival. The 2026 edition has ended. At Quinta da Massôrra, activities include walks, wine tastings, tastings of local products and taking part in some farming activities. If you would like to take part in these activities, arrange this in advance with the estate.

Arrive by Water and Spend Time on the Douro

Caldas de Aregos is accessible by road, rail and water. Those travelling to Resende on the Douro railway line can get off at Aregos station and cross to Resende on the Barca de Aregos. Check the Barca’s timetable before planning your trip. The Cais Turístico-Fluvial de Caldas de Aregos can accommodate large tourist vessels, including cruise and hotel ships; the marina has space for 100 leisure boats.

At the Parque Fluvial de Porto de Rei, several riverside amenities come together: a river beach, swimming pools, a landing stage for tourist boats, a pier, walking paths, parking, gardens and picnic facilities. Facilities may vary seasonally. The park restaurant serves escabeche river fish and eels; its operating schedule may also vary by season. The Termas de Caldas de Aregos are known for their therapeutically used thermal waters, which have been recognised since the 17th century. The building housing the Termas is undergoing renovation.
