Peso Da Régua brings together Douro culture, architectural history, railway heritage, riverside scenery and wine. These themes offer different points of interest: the Museu do Douro focuses on the region’s natural and cultural heritage, the railway offers a route and visual motifs, and the waterfront adds views and opportunities to observe nature. You can tailor your stay to your interests without following a set itinerary.

Museum and architectural history

The Museu do Douro represents the natural and cultural heritage of the Região Demarcada do Douro. Its permanent exhibition is titled “Douro: Matéria e Espírito”. The museum is housed in the restored Casa da Companhia, an 18th-century building. Here, the content and architectural history go hand in hand: the exhibition highlights the region’s cultural connections, while the building provides a specific architectural time frame. Those interested in Douro heritage will find two different perspectives in one place.

The headquarters of the Casa do Douro also adds a 20th-century connection to the architectural history: it dates from 1944. The exterior façade is made of polished granite, and inside there is a stained-glass window by painter Lino António. Compared with the 18th-century Casa da Companhia, the emphasis here is on a building from 1944 and two specific design features: stone and glass. These different historical periods help show that the area’s architectural history spans more than one era.

Church, bridge and riverside

The Igreja Matriz de Peso da Régua, also known as the Igreja de São Faustino, was built in the Baroque style in the 18th century and is dedicated to São Faustino. It is part of the municipality’s architectural heritage and, in addition to its liturgical function, is considered a point of reference for local identity and tourism. Its period, style and dedication offer different ways to understand it: the Baroque style describes its architectural form, while the dedication reflects its religious connections. The church thus adds another facet of cultural heritage to the museum and architectural history.

The Ponte Metálica, also known as the Ponte D. Luís, is a landmark of Peso da Régua and offers views of the Douro. At the quay by the railway station, walking, relaxing and enjoying the view take centre stage: this picturesque spot by the river invites visitors to enjoy these activities. The bridge and quay offer different experiences by the water: the landmark with views of the river, and a place to walk and linger. In the Zona Ribeirinha along the banks of the Douro, you can also observe the local fauna and flora. Nature observation adds a distinct interest to the views of the river.

Railways and wine culture

The Historic Douro Train runs along the Linha do Douro between Régua and Tua. It brings together railway heritage, cultural events and direct contact with the Douro region. Future seasonal offerings and timetables may change, so check the times if you are planning a journey. The tiles at stations along the Linha do Douro also tell the story of the region through images: they depict the grape harvest and the Douro landscape. Together, the train route and the tiles show two different sides of the railway theme: the journey itself and images of the harvest and landscape.

Peso Da Régua produces light, aromatic white wines, warm, velvety red wines and Port. Several quintas offer wine tastings and guided tours. The local wine profile and a visit to a quinta appeal to different interests: you can explore the wine styles mentioned or include a tasting or guided tour in your plans. If you are planning a visit, check with the relevant provider in advance about dates and availability.
