Covelinhas offers several themes to help you plan your trip: a circular walk, the late Baroque Igreja de Santa Comba and granite markers, each with its own connection to the area’s paths. You can decide first whether walking or architectural and boundary history will shape your trip.

Circular Walk through the Douro Vinhateiro

Described in 2025, the Trilho de Covelinhas à Galafura is a circular walking trail that runs through the Douro Vinhateiro. The starting and finishing point is Estação Ferroviária de Covelinhas. On a circular route, returning to the starting point is part of the route format, so you can plan the tour as a walk that starts and ends in the same place. Parking and mobile network coverage are available at the starting and finishing point. This information refers to the station as the starting and return point, not to the entire route. Check local conditions before your walk, as they may change.

Granite Markers and Architectural History

The “marco granítico n.º 26” is one of more than a hundred markers used to delineate the Região Vinhateira do Alto Douro, also known as Alto Douro Vinhateiro. The marker is located on the path from Galafura to Covelinhas. By contrast, the “marco granítico n.º 28” stands alongside the public path from Covelinhas to Cidermas de Baixo. The locations associated with the two stones differ: the n.º 26 is classified by its function as a boundary marker, while the n.º 28 is specifically associated with its location beside the public path. The figure of more than a hundred markers shows that the n.º 26 is part of a larger group and does not, by itself, mark the boundary.

Igreja de Santa Comba is a religious building in the late Baroque style. Its floor plan is longitudinal: a single nave leads to a lower and narrower chancel. A square bell tower stands on the nave’s left side façade; a rectangular sacristy is attached to the chancel. The nave forms the main space of the complex, while the chancel continues along the longitudinal axis at a narrower width and lower height. To appreciate the architectural form, you can first follow this axis and then note the positions of the tower and sacristy. This complements the description of the style with specific forms and their arrangement.

Estação de C. F. de Covelinhas is also listed in the municipal register of architectural heritage. Covelinhas therefore brings together different types of buildings as cultural points of interest: a religious building in the late Baroque style and a station listed as architectural heritage. Together with the granite markers, they offer a way to explore the area’s history that is not limited to a single building or a single route.
