Four gates and twelve bastions define the Fortaleza de Valença. From the Baluarte de Santa Ana, sweeping panoramic views open up across both walled sections of the fortress and towards Galicia. In Valença, you encounter two distinct scales: the many-part fortifications and the expansive views beyond their walls.

Fortress and cultural traces

The different parts of the Fortaleza were built in various periods. This gives the complex a layered architectural history rather than reducing it to a single phase of construction. The Pelourinho de Valença preserves a different historical trace. It consists of a milestone from Emperor Tiberius Claudius, which marked the Roman road between Braga, Tuy and Lugo. The monument shifts the focus from the fortress to a road connection dating back to Roman times.

The Igreja de Sanfins de Friestas is classified as a Monumento Nacional and is regarded as an important Romanesque monument. The long-lasting Galician influence is particularly evident here. The Centro de Interpretação de Sanfins is located in the Mosteiro de Sanfins.

River, protected area and memory

Along the Minho, the focus shifts from buildings to landscape, work and leisure. The Centro de Promoção do Rio Minho is located at Senhora da Cabeça in Cristelo Covo. Its areas are dedicated to Natura 2000, river cuisine, the Lanço da Cruz, the Minho River, fishing and recreation by the river. An area devoted to the living memory of the river brings together accounts from fishermen, adding a personal historical dimension to the river perspective.

The broader natural landscape is also specifically defined: the Estuário dos Rios Minho e Coura Special Protection Area stretches from Valença to the mouth of the Minho and includes a small adjoining marine area. The river, estuary and marine environment are among the distinct facets of this protected area.

Market and cuisine

The Feira Anual dos Santos in Cerdal gives the year a fixed date: it takes place every year on 1 and 2 November. It includes more than 400 stalls selling clothing, crockery and shoes; the number may vary from one edition to another. There are also food stalls, livestock sales, sales of agricultural products and farm machinery, as well as amusement parks and other attractions. In this way, the Feira combines shopping with entertainment.

Associated with the Feira is Pericos dos Santos, a speciality made exclusively in Valença. Lampreia is also served in Valença in five preparations: Arroz de Lampreia, à Bordalesa, Assada no Forno, Recheada and Seca. The names illustrate the range of traditional preparations without conflating the festive speciality with lamprey.

Routes

The Ecopista do Rio Minho in the Valença area is intended for cycling and walking. The connection to the Caminho Português Central depends on the direction of travel: when taken in reverse, Valença marks the beginning of the Caminhos de Fátima.
