Labrujó brings together cultural traditions and a route through several places. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these different highlights: historic places and traditions on the one hand, and the Rota das Paisagens Protegidas do Alto Minho on the other.
A circular route through several places
The Rota das Paisagens Protegidas do Alto Minho is a circular route approximately 100 km long. It can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, and begins at the Centro de Interpretação das Aldeias da Mesa dos Abades in Vilar do Monte. Along the way, it passes through Labrujó, Rendufe and Vilar do Monte, as well as the Área Protegida de Corno de Bico. The starting point, circular layout and approximate length give the tour a clear geographical framework; the different ways of travelling help you choose the focus according to how you want to get around. At around 100 kilometres, the loop is a planning consideration in its own right, alongside individual cultural sites or a festival date.
Cultural history and special places
The Chapel of Santa Luzia in Rendufe was built in 1624 by the residents of Sobrada. Antela da Cruz Vermelha is one of the most important tourist sites in the municipality of Labrujó, Rendufe e Vilar do Monte. A prehistoric castro is said to have stood nearby, on the boundary between Labrujó and Rendufe. The parish church and the place known as Lugar da Cruz Vermelha are also among the cultural and tourist attractions of the three places. Together, these sites represent different points of historical interest: a chapel with a documented construction date, a tourist site and possible traces of a prehistoric settlement.
Traditions and dates
The tradition of the Mesa dos 4 Abades dates back to the 17th century. It was revived in 1988; today, it is organised by the parish councils without the involvement of the parish priests. Its long history and the change in who organises it give the tradition a distinct cultural significance in the area.
The Senhor do Bonfim festival in Labrujó takes place on the second Sunday in August. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the specific event date before booking.
Scenery, crafts and regional cuisine
In the area of the Mesa dos 4 Abades, the landscape is shaped by green, terraced farmland, waterways, mills and wild Garrano horses. Labrujó, Rendufe and Vilar do Monte offer panoramic views across the entire Vale da Serra da Labruja. The circular route offers a changing perspective on several places and the Área Protegida de Corno de Bico, while the panoramas draw your gaze to the valley as a whole.
The craft traditions of Labrujó, Rendufe e Vilar do Monte include weaving, as well as blankets and rugs made from rags and linen. Regional cuisine is also part of the travel experience: in the area of the Mesa dos 4 Abades, Arroz de sarrabulho à moda de Ponte de Lima is one of the gastronomic highlights. In the village restaurants, you can try regional cuisine with traditional flavours. Alongside the historic sites, these offer specific cultural and culinary themes to consider when planning your trip.
