Wetlands, riverside trails and historic buildings offer different perspectives on Ponte De Lima. The protected area of Lagoas de Bertiandos e S. Pedro d’Arcos, designated a wetland of international importance, encompasses two lagoons and extends along the banks of the Rio Estorãos. In the historic town, the Roman bridge over the Rio Lima points to the origin of the old Vila’s name: it gave Ponte de Lima its name. Nature and architectural history stand side by side here as distinct avenues of discovery.
Lagoons, riverbanks and different trails
The protected area has 25 km of signposted Ecovias, with a range of routes, as well as observation towers and lookout points. Guided visits are organised, and audio guides are provided. This brings together trails and viewing opportunities with activities that introduce visitors to the natural environment. The Ecovia da Laranja provides a specific link between two places: it runs from the Vila of Ponte de Lima to Cais da Garrida in Refoios do Lima.
The Ecovia das Lagoas has a different, clearly defined endpoint: it ends in Fontão at the mouth of the Ribeira da Silvareira. Walking, cycling and horse riding are listed as suitable ways to travel this route. Other route figures refer to different scales: the Grande Rota de Montanha stage in the Concelho of Ponte de Lima is approximately 36.19 km long. The inner route of the Caminho Português de Santiago de Compostela passes through Ponte de Lima and continues to Valença, covering 38 km. These lengths describe different routes or offerings, not individual sections of a single trail.
Architectural history in towers, a bridge and a church
The Torre da Cadeia Velha and the Torre de S. Paulo preserve the most significant surviving remains of Ponte de Lima’s fortification system, built in the 14th century. The Torre da Cadeia Velha also serves a practical purpose: it houses the tourist office and hosts temporary exhibitions. For the Ponte Romana e Ponte Medieval, the date explicitly refers to the Roman section: it probably dates from the 1st century.
The construction period and later decoration of the Igreja da Ordem Terceira can also be distinguished. The church was built between 1745 and 1747 and furnished in the following decades with Rococo altarpieces, pulpits and lambrequins. The Centro de Interpretação da História Militar de Ponte de Lima is housed in the Paço do Marquês, built in the second half of the 15th century as the residence of the alcaide-mor D. Leonel de Lima. The centre recounts significant military episodes from the historic Vila and surrounding area, and traces the development of weapons, clothing and uniforms.
Museums and rural ways of life
The Museu dos Terceiros is housed in the former Convento de Santo António dos Capuchos and the building of the Ordem Terceira de São Francisco. A different perspective is offered by the permanent exhibition at the Museu do Brinquedo Português, which presents Portuguese toy makers from the late 19th century through to 1986. Together, the two museums take visitors from architectural and religious-order history to a subject rooted in everyday life and production.
The Centro de Interpretação do Território invites visitors to discover the everyday rural life of the people of Ponte de Lima and experience traditional farming practices. Topics covered include land management, breadmaking, wine and flax production, and livestock farming. The focus therefore extends beyond buildings and historical episodes to include the activities that shape rural life.
Gardens, festivals and the flavours of Alto Minho
The Festival Internacional de Jardins covers about 2.5 hectares and features twelve gardens, each with a different design. At the Feiras Novas, rusgas, call-and-response singing and folk traditions take place throughout the town; the festival is held on the second weekend of September. Another longstanding tradition takes place on the eve of Corpus Christi: a cow guided by ropes makes its way along some streets in the historic centre to the sandy riverbank of the Rio Lima.
Regional cuisine is also closely associated with the town’s name: Arroz de Sarrabulho à Moda de Ponte de Lima is a particularly important expression of Alto Minho’s gastronomic heritage. The Centro de Interpretação e Promoção do Vinho Verde has a permanent exhibition and a wine-tasting room. Discoveries thus range from landscaped gardens and festival traditions to regional cuisine and wine.
