In Monção, historic landmarks meet opportunities for walks along the Rio Minho. The Muralhas offer views of the river, the Galician bank and Parque das Caldas; a wooden walkway connects the historic centre with this park. Museums and churches offer other perspectives, telling stories of domestic life, collections and the town’s architectural history. You can get to know Monção according to your interests, through its urban history, cultural sites or paths by the water.

Walls and paths along the Rio Minho

The Muralhas de Monção were classified as a National Monument by decree on 16 June 1910. They offer peaceful walks with views of the Rio Minho, the Galician bank and Parque das Caldas. The views make this walk a way to experience the town walls both as a historic structure and as a place overlooking the river landscape.

Another walking option is the Passadiço A Galiza Mail’o Minho. This wooden walkway runs alongside the Rio Minho and connects the historic centre with Parque das Caldas. Those who prefer a route along the river will find a different focus here from a walk on the Muralhas, whose views also take in the park and the Galician bank.

Town history and architecture

At Castelo de Monção, the focus is on the history of its defences: in 1306, D. Dinis ordered its construction as part of a nationwide plan to strengthen the defences. The bastions facing the Rio Minho are now viewpoints. Most of the castle walls are easy to walk along. Those interested in historic sites can combine views of the bastions with a walk along much of the walls.

Igreja Matriz de Monção also offers a unique insight into architectural history. The Gothic church was built in 1308. It includes the Capela de São Sebastião, which the Portuguese state classified as a Property of Public Interest for its Manueline work. Igreja Matriz combines Gothic architecture with the Manueline work of the Capela de São Sebastião.

Museums: domestic life and collections

Casa Museu de Monção is housed in an 18th-century building. The first floor has been preserved as it was when the building was used as a family residence. The exhibition presents the lifestyle of an upper-middle-class family in the early 20th century. The collection includes French and Portuguese ebony furniture, tapestries, silverware, porcelain and crystal, as well as personal belongings of Teresa Salgueiro. The architecture, home and collection thus offer different perspectives on the history of the house.

Museu Monção & Memórias is located on Rua da Independência, in the Edifício Souto D’El Rei in Monção.

Tradition and relaxation

Festa da Coca is celebrated every year on the Thursday of the Feast of Corpus Christi. If you would like to experience this recurring festival during your visit, check the date for the year in question. This lets you plan your trip around a specific local tradition rather than treating the festival as an experience available at any time.

Termas de Monção invites visitors to walk among numerous centuries-old trees and is described as a place for relaxation and leisure. This complements the paths along the walls and the Minho with another focus: here, the emphasis is on trees, walks and peaceful leisure. This offers a clear distinction between architectural history, museum visits, river views and a walk in a tree-filled setting when choosing what to experience.
