At the Palácio da Brejoeira, Alvarinho culture meets architectural history: construction of the grand neoclassical manor house began in the early 19th century and was completed around thirty years later. Alvarinho wine and authentic bagaceira brandy are produced here. Monção’s wine identity, however, extends beyond individual products.

Alvarinho and local cuisine

The Museu do Alvarinho presents Monção as the “cradle of Alvarinho” and offers insights into the area and its people. Its exhibition introduces the Monção and Melgaço subregion as a unique area for Alvarinho production, and Alvarinho as a high-quality gastronomic product. This makes wine tangible not only as a product, but also as part of the region’s culture.

The cuisine also offers concrete points of connection. Lombelo à S. Jorge brings together Bicas, creamy rice with turnip greens and sausages, succulent meat, and a reduction made with Alvarinho wine. Monção’s gastronomy also includes, among other things, salmon, lamprey, shad, chicken and various smoked foods. Cordeiro à Moda de Monção is also known here as Foda à Monção. The traditional meal associated with Senhora da Cabeça in Cortes is also shaped by local gastronomy.

Buildings and their stories

The Torre de Lapela dates back to the 14th century and rises about 35 metres above the Minho riverbed. You can enjoy another view of the river on a walk along the Fortaleza de Monção, also known as the Muralhas de Monção: from there, you can see the Minho and the Galician bank. The fortress has been classified as a National Monument since 16 June 1910.

Religious buildings also preserve different chapters of history. The Igreja Matriz is a 13th-century Romanesque church. Its chapels commemorate Deu-la-Deu Martins and Dom Vasco Marinho. The Igreja de Longos Vales, also known as the Igreja de São João Baptista, is part of a former monastery of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine, founded by Dom Afonso Henriques in 1197. Its churchyard contains anthropomorphic graves carved into the rock and discovered in 1998.

The Mosteiro de Merufe is a Romanesque monastery. The former Convento das Irmãs Bentas served as accommodation for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. The Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres offers a different example of religious architecture: the Mannerist chapel in Ermida was built in the late 16th century. The poet João Verde, who was born in Monção, lived in Casa do Arco. The Cine Teatro João Verde reopened on 25 April 2013 after extensive renovation.

Routes, landscapes and views

The Ecopista do Rio Minho runs between Valença and Monção along a former railway line and has been extended to 17 kilometres. Along the way, it offers views of the Minho riverbed, the surrounding vineyards and Galicia. The route thus combines traces of the former railway with sweeping landscape views. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the current route conditions.

Santo António Vale de Poldros in Monção is also included in the Rota das Aldeias do Alto Minho cycling and walking route. This route is not signposted on site and is followed using a GPS track, so check the route files before setting off. At Castro de São Caetano, a hike leads up to the summit. From there, views stretch across the Minho Valley, vineyards, valleys and mountains around Monção. The Castro is a significant fortified settlement site of the protohistoric culture of the north-western Iberian Peninsula, classified as a National Monument.

Festivals and thermal history

The Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Cabeça in Cortes is closely linked to the Easter celebrations; its dates vary according to the Easter calendar. Pilgrims make their way to the sanctuary in Bouças, Monção. The Romaria includes religious celebrations as well as petiscos, socialising under the trees and an evening verbena. Individual programme details may vary.

Another historical thread leads to Monção’s thermal waters, which have been used since the 17th century. The Parque das Caldas de Monção is laid out around an avenue lined with cedars and lime trees. The avenue connects the old bathhouse with small areas for visitors to relax, making the layout of the park easy to appreciate.
