Melgaço brings together traces of its urban history, museums covering a range of subjects, and a trail along the Minho. You can include Romanesque architecture, archaeological remains and more recent history in your plans for exploring the area. The Igreja Matriz is in the historic centre; the Percurso Marginal do Rio Minho also starts in the town centre and follows the riverbank, offering a very different perspective.

Romanesque architecture and historical traces

The Igreja Matriz de Melgaço is a 12th-century Romanesque church in the historic centre. Two Romanesque portals have survived—a specific detail that offers insight into the building’s architecture. The Muralha de Melgaço also dates from the 12th century and is a National Monument.

The Castelo de Melgaço is a historic fortress built by order of Dom Afonso Henriques in the 12th or 13th century. The climb to the Torre de Menagem offers views of the neighbouring mountains and the historic centre. The Estátua de Inês Negra stands beside the castle wall; it was unveiled on 10 June 1995. The Fonte de S. João features a different architectural style: this 18th-century Baroque fountain is located in Praça da República.

Museums offering different perspectives

The Núcleo Museológico da Torre de Menagem e as Ruínas Arqueológicas explores Melgaço’s architectural, historical and cultural heritage. Its indoor exhibition covers the town’s architectural and archaeological heritage from prehistoric times to the present day. The ruins include a medieval moat and paving from different periods. The site therefore explores much more than a single historical period.

The Museu de Cinema de Melgaço Jean Loup Passek opened in 2005 in the historic part of the town. Spread over two floors, it features a permanent exhibition and a temporary exhibition. The Espaço Memória e Fronteira focuses on Melgaço’s more recent history, particularly emigration and smuggling. One specific period it covers is illegal emigration in the 1960s and 1970s. The museums thus bring together archaeological and architectural traces with more recent themes of migration and smuggling.

Along the Minho

The Percurso Marginal do Rio Minho starts in the town centre beside the Igreja Matriz and the Igreja da Misericórdia. Along the river, a wooden walkway about 1,500 metres long forms part of the route. The full route ends in Peso after approximately 5.7 kilometres. When planning your trip, note that these figures refer to different things: about 1,500 metres is the length of the wooden walkway, while approximately 5.7 kilometres is the distance to the end of the trail.

Alvarinho and local events

In the historic centre, the Solar do Alvarinho is dedicated to Alvarinho wine and typical products from Melgaço. There, you can sample numerous Alvarinho wines from the region free of charge. It offers a way to explore the region’s wine and local produce.

A separate event is the Festa do Alvarinho e do Fumeiro de Melgaço, held annually since 1995. It showcases the new Alvarinho vintage and that year’s Fumeiro. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact event dates in advance.
