In Lamas De Mouro, you can discover nature and cultural heritage along a variety of trails. The interpretive trail starts and ends beside the Porta de Lamas de Mouro, one of the entrances to Peneda-Gerês National Park. Other routes lead towards Dorna, Cevide, Parada do Monte and Peneda. This makes it possible to tailor your stay to the scenery, trail length and cultural sites along the way. The Rio Mouro accompanies one trail, can be seen as a watercourse from another, and begins in Lamas de Mouro where three springs meet.
Choosing a trail between river, forest and distance
The interpretive trail passes through a small woodland and offers views of the Rio Mouro. Along the way, it crosses different habitats where several bird species can be observed. Its start and end point is beside the Porta de Lamas de Mouro. This trail thus combines nature watching with a connection to the entrance of Peneda-Gerês National Park.
The approximately 12 km Lamas de Mouro–Dorna trail also starts beside the Porta and ends at the Inverneira de Dorna in Castro Laboreiro. It runs alongside the Rio Mouro and passes granite outcrops. The river is more than just a feature of the landscape along the route: it begins in Lamas de Mouro where three springs meet. Together, the river, springs and rock outcrops give the trail a clear connection to the local landscape.
The other routes can also be compared by distance and destination. The approximately 7 km second stage runs from Castro Laboreiro towards Lamas de Mouro. The third stage starts at the Porta and runs for just over 8 km to the village of Peneda. It passes through mixed woodland alongside the Rio Mouro, almost to its source at Portela do Lagarto. In the municipal trail network, the 9.3 km Lamas de Mouro–Parada do Monte trail is marked as TRILHO X.
The linear Lamas de Mouro–Cevide route is approximately 16 km long. It starts beside the Alminhas do Carvalho, which form part of the popular artistic and religious cultural heritage. Distances therefore range from around 7 km for the second stage to approximately 16 km for the route to Cevide; the stages also have different starting points and destinations. When choosing a route, you can first compare them by direction and distance.
Visitor information and exhibition at the Porta
The Porta de Lamas de Mouro serves visitors to Peneda-Gerês National Park as a reception, recreation and information centre. It includes a picnic area, changing rooms and a campsite. A permanent exhibition covers land use and the natural and cultural features of the Melgaço area. The Porta thus brings together park information, exhibits and the visitor facilities listed above.
Church, cultural heritage and festival calendar
The Igreja Paroquial de São João Baptista is a medieval Romanesque church. Its interior formerly served as a baptistery for the neighbouring villages. A municipal road leads from the EN 202 to the church; the EN 202 connects Melgaço with Castro Laboreiro. Parking is available nearby. A visit to the church adds a historic stop to the trails, with a specific former purpose.
The local festival calendar includes the Festa de São João Batista on 24 June. This date provides a specific point of reference for planning your trip if you are also interested in local festival traditions. With the church, the Alminhas do Carvalho and the different trails, Lamas de Mouro offers various ways to explore culture and landscape, which you can choose according to your interests and the destinations listed.
