Porto Covo is a fishing village with small white houses and a coastline of steep, secluded beaches. The town offers a range of options for planning your trip: the town beach, Praia Grande; the history of Ilha do Pessegueiro; hiking trails; and activities on the water. You can decide which will shape your stay based on the season and the tides.

Beaches, surf and tides

Praia Grande de Porto Covo lies right next to the town, within the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. As a town beach, it has good access and supporting facilities. The surf is occasionally strong, which appeals to surfers. Praia da Ilha do Pessegueiro, meanwhile, offers suitable conditions for water sports such as windsurfing.

The tide is another factor to consider when planning: at low tide, Praia da Gaivota can be reached from Praia do Banho through a gap in the rocks. Check the tide before visiting. The name Praia do Banho also refers to a tradition: it comes from the swim on 29 August, a cultural event with pagan origins.

Ilha do Pessegueiro and its fortifications

The fortified complex includes structures on the beach and on Ilha do Pessegueiro. Forte de Nossa Senhora da Queimada, also known as Forte do Pessegueiro, is situated on a rocky slope in the southern part of the beach. Forte de Santo Alberto, also known as Forte da Ilha de Dentro, stands in the middle of Ilha do Pessegueiro, off the coast. At Forte do Pessegueiro near Porto Covo, you can see two bastions, a moat, barracks and a chapel.

Ilha do Pessegueiro preserves evidence of ancient settlement, including a Roman fish-salting facility. Porto Covo itself was rebuilt by the Marquês de Pombal after the 1755 earthquake. The town and island therefore bring together different historical themes: fortifications and ancient fish processing.

Hiking and boat trips

The first stage of the Trilho dos Pescadores begins in Porto Covo and is part of the Rota Vicentina. It passes several sandy beaches and the extensive dunes of Ilha do Pessegueiro. Before setting out, check the current route, as sections may change and conditions vary seasonally.

For diving trips in Porto Covo, Ecoalga regularly offers dates between May and October; check the seasonal information before booking. The operator runs boat trips between Porto Covo and Malhão beach all year round. Booking details may change. In summer, various types of boat are available for visits to Ilha do Pessegueiro.

Traditions and dates

Apanha do Pato is a century-old tradition in Porto Covo bay. Participants swim to catch a duck; the event is seasonal. Celebrations in honour of Nossa Senhora da Soledade include a candlelit procession through the town on 29 August and a daytime procession through Porto Covo on 30 August. Check the dates for your planned visit.

Season and tides are practical planning considerations alongside your interests in the beach, hiking and history.
