Costa da Caparica combines a long, continuous stretch of beach with a protected coastal landscape. Water sports, a local fishing tradition and a cycling route also shape the possible focus of a stay. When planning, it is important to bear in mind that these experiences involve different conditions and scales.

Beachfront and protected coast

Beyond Vila Costa da Caparica, a continuous sandy beach begins, stretching for about 30 kilometres to Fonte da Telha. Most of it is incorporated into the Área de Paisagem Protegida da Arriba Fóssil da Costa de Caparica. Classified as a protected landscape in 1984, it extends for about 13 kilometres along the coast between the town of Costa da Caparica and Lagoa de Albufeira in the municipality of Sesimbra. It covers 1,599 hectares.

The two lengths describe different features: the approximately 30 kilometres refer to the continuous sandy beach, while the approximately 13 kilometres refer to the coastal extent of the protected landscape. The beach and landscape protection therefore each offer a distinct perspective on the coast. The Costa da Caparica Tourist Office is located on the urban beachfront and provides a specific point of reference within the town.

Beach activities and orientation

Surfing, bodyboarding and stand-up paddleboarding are listed as maritime tourism activities at Praia da Mata. Praia da Mata is also a lifeguarded beach with a concession. When planning, bear in mind that beach operations may change seasonally, and the activities on offer are also seasonal. If your visit depends on a particular activity or beach conditions, check in advance.

This section of the beach is therefore different from a visit focused primarily on the coastal landscape or fishing tradition. The water sports mentioned offer a specific connection to Praia da Mata; however, they should not be considered a year-round programme that remains unchanged. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering not only which activity appeals to you, but also when you intend to visit.

Arte-Xávega: a fishing tradition with its own rhythm

At the southern end of Praia de São João, you can observe Arte-Xávega, a traditional fishing technique and a defining tradition of Costa da Caparica. It is actively practised on the Atlantic beaches of Costa da Caparica by fishing groups from Costa da Caparica and Fonte da Telha. This means you encounter the tradition not only as part of the town’s identity, but also as a living practice.

Arte-Xávega is practised at Costa da Caparica mainly seasonally, between March and October. Some fishing groups now practise it year-round. However, whether you can observe it depends on fishing activity and sea conditions. The season is therefore a guide to when to travel, not a guarantee that you will see it on a particular day. If this experience is important to you, factor both the season and changing conditions into your plans.

Cycling route and trip focus

Along the Frente Urbana de Praias on Avenida General Humberto Delgado, the Costa Atlântica cycling route includes a 4,100-metre cycle path. Its stated length gives cycling a distinct, specifically defined place alongside the seasonal beach activities and fishing tradition. The three focuses therefore differ not only in subject, but also in how much they depend on the season or current conditions.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Costa da Caparica, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the long sandy beach, water sports at Praia da Mata, Arte-Xávega or the cycling route. The right planning steps vary depending on your interests. Seasonal changes matter for beach activities; for observing the fishing, the season and sea conditions also come into play. This makes it easier to assess the destination based on the specific experiences that interest you, without treating them as a fixed itinerary.
