Casais dos Monizes can be explored through several specific route connections: this is where the first stage of the Caminho dos Candeeiros ends; the second stage of the Caminhos de Fátima connects the village with Alvados. There is also a viewpoint in the natural park, vegetation typical of the Serra dos Candeeiros, and mill ruins along the Entre Aldeias Serranas route. These stages and local features offer different points of reference for planning your stay.
Stages by distance and route
The first stage of the Caminho dos Candeeiros runs from Rio Maior to Casais dos Monizes. It is 18 km long and rated difficult. The second stage of the Caminhos de Fátima connects Casais dos Monizes with Alvados, where it crosses the Caminho da Nazaré. This stage is listed as approximately 27 km long.
At approximately 27 km, the second stage is around nine kilometres longer than the 18 km route. The destinations also differ: the first runs from Rio Maior to Casais dos Monizes, while the second includes Alvados and the crossing with the Caminho da Nazaré. This comparison helps you assess the stages by distance and route. Check the conditions of each route before hiking.
Elevation and landscape
Casais dos Monizes is one of the highest-altitude villages in the municipality of Rio Maior. The Miradouro de Casais Monizes is in the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros, on the road connecting Alcobertas and Casais dos Monizes. These are two different points of reference for orientation: the village’s elevation within the municipality and the viewpoint’s specific location in the natural park.
The approach to Casais dos Monizes includes a very steep climb. Take this into account when planning your journey, in addition to the hiking route distances: the climb describes the approach, while the kilometre figures refer to the stages.
The Roteiro da Serra follows scenic paths lined with vegetation typical of the Serra dos Candeeiros. Its return to Alto da Serra follows the ridge of the Serra dos Candeeiros. This describes both the surroundings along the route and the course of the return journey through specific landscape features.
Mill ruins along the route
Along the Entre Aldeias Serranas route, there are ruins of several mills in Casais dos Monizes. They offer a different focus from the information about stage distances and vegetation: here, the emphasis is on a trace of the area’s built heritage. If you are interested in landscapes and rural heritage, you can distinguish these route features by theme—the vegetation and ridge on the Roteiro da Serra, and the mill ruins on the Entre Aldeias Serranas route.
