In Alcobertas, a Neolithic funerary monument, archaeological remains and distinctive landscapes come together. The circular trails also vary in length. If you are looking for accommodation in Alcobertas, you can start by considering whether cultural sites, nature or hiking will shape your stay.
Megaliths and Archaeological Remains
The Dólmen de Alcobertas is a megalithic funerary monument from the Neolithic period and is one of the ten largest examples on the Iberian Peninsula. The Silos de Alcobertas tell a story of another use of the site: they were used to store grain and containers holding other products, including olive oil, salted meat and wine. They also form the largest known group of their kind outside an urban, domestic or religious context on the Iberian Peninsula.
The Igreja Paroquial de Alcobertas is also among the area's important cultural sites; it is classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” (IIP), or Property of Public Interest. The Forno Medieval de Alcobertas was a communal oven where pottery was fired centuries ago. Today, the restored oven is housed in a covered structure that serves as an interpretive space within the Núcleo Arqueológico de Alcobertas. The funerary monument, silos, church and oven represent different aspects of Alcobertas' archaeological and historical heritage.
Spring, Cave and Protected Landscape
Olho de Água de Alcobertas is located within the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros. It is one of the five most important year-round springs in the Maciço Calcário Estremenho. The Geossítio do Vale de Barco offers another insight into the area's geology: it is a former calcite quarry within the natural park.
Gruta de Alcobertas consists of four horizontally arranged chambers. It extends for about 210 metres and reaches a height of nine metres in some places. Visits are subject to a specific access requirement: they are currently available only to groups and by prior arrangement with Cooperativa Terra Chã. The cooperative offers an interpretive cave tour on the second Sunday of every month; advance booking is also required for this.
Leisure Area and Circular Trails
Jardim Porto do Rio is a recreation and leisure area in Alcobertas. Its facilities include planted areas, a playground and exercise equipment. Ribeira de Alcobertas flows through the garden, forming small cascades along the path. This place brings together several distinct features: landscaped green spaces, leisure facilities and a stream.
Two circular trails offer an easy comparison in terms of length and starting points. The Potes Mouros circular trail is 4.65 kilometres long and starts and ends at Parque do Porto do Rio in Alcobertas. The Castro S. Martinho circular trail covers 16.3 kilometres; both its start and finish are at Cooperativa Terra Chã in Alcobertas.
Caminho dos Candeeiros is also directly connected to Alcobertas: Anta-capela de Alcobertas is one of its attractions. Together with the two circular trails, it offers another way to plan your trip around the routes and their explicitly named destinations.
