Pinheiro Grande brings together landscape, local history and outdoor activities, offering a range of ways to enjoy a stay. From Miradouro das Cabeças, take in panoramic views of the Tagus and the Ribatejo plain; the parish church is linked to the former Comenda de Cristo, and the Convento de Santo António was founded for Franciscan monks. There is also the Percurso de Manutenção and the Centro Cycling'Portugal do Arripiado–Chamusca route. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether views, historical connections or outdoor activities should be your main focus.

Views and outdoor activities

Miradouro das Cabeças offers panoramic views of the Tagus and the Ribatejo plain. This distinct feature of the landscape complements the town’s cultural and historical landmarks. If you would rather focus on views and scenery than on stories of the town’s founding, Miradouro is a good place to start.

The Percurso de Manutenção offers the opportunity to exercise outdoors and connect with nature. This provides a different kind of activity from Miradouro: here, the focus is on outdoor exercise, while there it is on panoramic views. If you would like to include physical activity in your plans, the Percurso de Manutenção is another option.

A cycling route through Pinheiro Grande

The Centro Cycling'Portugal do Arripiado–Chamusca route passes through Pinheiro Grande and Carregueira. It is rated as moderate and follows agricultural roads in the area around the left bank of the Tagus. Its difficulty level, type of path and route give the cycling trip its own character. Unlike the Percurso de Manutenção, it is specifically described as a cycling route; the Percurso focuses on outdoor exercise and contact with nature. Check local conditions before setting off.

History at the church and convent

The parish church of Pinheiro Grande is at the heart of the former Comenda de Cristo. It was founded in the 16th century by one of the first commanders of the order. The Convento de Santo António has a different founding story: D. Manuel I founded it for Franciscan monks. Together, these sites represent two distinct historical connections: the church’s link to the former Comenda de Cristo and the convent’s foundation for Franciscan monks.

The Ponte da Chamusca “Isidro dos Reis” is another place to visit in Pinheiro Grande. It adds a named destination to the range of options alongside the viewpoint, routes and historical landmarks.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for a hotel in Pinheiro Grande, you can use your interests as a starting point. If landscapes and views are your priority, the Miradouro offers a focus; for cultural history, consider the different connections of the parish church and convent, and for exercise, there are two routes to choose from.
