Discover Minde through two distinct themes: the Polje de Minde and a local history shaped by watercolour art and textile production. The town’s story is reflected not only in its buildings, but also in an unusual depression and the cultural traces left by working with wool. When looking for a hotel in Minde, you can first consider whether the natural landscape or the town’s history will shape your stay more.

The Polje de Minde and the lagoon

The Polje de Minde is a shallow depression stretching 4 km in length and 1.8 km in width. It floods when rainfall is heavier. It is fed by the four springs of Mindinho, Contenda, Poio and Olho de Mira. Rainfall, springs and depression are therefore all part of the landscape: a description of the polje encompasses both its shape and its water supply.

The formation known as “Lagoa de Minde” is the most significant of its kind in the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros and the only one of its kind in Portugal. These two descriptions refer to different scales: one relates to the natural park, the other to Portugal. For anyone interested in nature and geology, it offers a concrete starting point for discovering Minde through its landscape.

Townscape, church and watercolour museum

Minde’s historic townscape is characterised by narrow, winding streets. One of its historic landmarks is the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, founded in 1623. Another distinctive feature is the iron bandstand dating from 1933, a reminder of the town’s cultural and artistic life. Together, these different buildings show that Minde’s history cannot be traced back to a single date.

Casa Açores dates from 1926 and houses the Museu de Aguarela Roque Gameiro. The museum presents changing exhibitions and includes a room for drawing and watercolour painting, as well as a documentation centre. Its offerings therefore include not only viewing art, but also practising art and accessing documentation. Minderico and textile history

The Minderico language developed in connection with the production and sale of blankets and other woollen goods in Minde. It was a coded language used by market traders and was probably spoken from the 18th century until almost the middle of the 20th century. This connection between trade, craftsmanship and language offers a distinctive way to explore the town’s history.

Textile production in Minde is also documented for 1802: wool was processed, and buréis, panos de varas, alforges and blankets were woven or made for the troops, foundries and arsenals of the army and navy. These products show that wool-working at the time involved a range of goods, some of which were destined for military institutions. Today, the weaving workshop in Minde serves as a centre for interpreting and producing the “Manta de Minde”.

The Materiais Diversos Festival was founded in Minde in 2009. If you would like to plan a trip around the festival, check the latest programme information and dates in advance. This keeps its historical origins distinct from the question of attending a specific event.

Planning your stay in Minde

When looking for a hotel in Minde, it helps to start with a clear question: are you drawn mainly to the distinctive landscape of the polje, or would you rather focus on the townscape, watercolour art and textile history? These themes can guide your travel plans without prescribing a set itinerary. You can weigh nature and culture according to your interests and choose the subjects that matter most for your stay.
