At the source of the Rio Alviela, cold, crystal-clear water emerges from the depths of the Maciço Calcário Estremenho. This karst landscape also bears the mark of an important piece of infrastructure history: the spring played a major role in supplying water to Lisbon via the Aqueduto do Alviela, built in 1878. Alcanena lies at the foot of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros, an area designated as a nature park.

Spring, karst, and water

The PR1 ACN – Rota Olhos d'Água do Alviela is an interpretive trail that runs from the spring to the sinkhole of the Ribeira dos Amiais. A karst window along the route reveals the underground course of the Ribeira and several levels of limestone caves. Those interested in the landscape beneath the surface will find a tangible connection here between the watercourse and karst features.

The Carsoscópio, or Centro Ciência Viva de Alviela, is also dedicated to the Alviela. It features the Geódromo, Carso, and Quiroptário exhibitions. During the seasonal “Noite dos morcegos” activity, bat colonies from the Alviela caves can be observed using remote-controlled infrared cameras and ultrasonic detectors. The activity is available only from April to September.

The facilities at Praia Fluvial dos Olhos d'Água include a bathing area, a picnic park, a children’s playground, and a sand play area. This riverside spot offers different ways to spend time: swimming, taking a break in the picnic park, or enjoying the play area.

Museums and buildings in Alcanena

The Museu Municipal de Alcanena combines local history with an unusual collection: its tannery collection is considered unique in Portugal for its technical, scientific, and industrial significance. The local history collection also includes rails from the “Rata Cega” train, which operated in Alcanena at the end of the 19th century, as well as spinning equipment from Minde. Archaeological finds from the area date from the Paleolithic, 45,000 years ago, to modern times.

A very different collection is on display at the Museu da Boneca, which houses around 7,000 dolls and figures in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. When a demonstration is taking place, you can watch the collection’s owner repair toys in the interactive “Hospital de Bonecas.” The Museu de Aguarela Roque Gameiro presents changing works alongside its permanent exhibitions and offers a space for drawing and watercolour painting.

The architecture also tells the story of different eras and functions. The Igreja de S. Pedro in Alcanena combines revivalist features with a neo-Gothic portal on its façade. Around Praça Marechal Carmona, the historic centre includes buildings from the early 20th century, some with wrought-iron balconies. In Louriceira, the aqueducts, particularly the Arcada do Vale, form part of the municipality’s architectural heritage and industrial archaeology.

The Museu Rural e Etnográfico de Espinheiro explores traditional clothing, household items, and agricultural tools from earlier times. Together with the tannery, doll, and art collections, it offers a broad view of what you can discover in Alcanena: crafts and everyday life, archaeological finds, and visual art.

Routes and different perspectives

The PR8 ACN – Entre o Aqueduto e o Alviela starts at Praia Fluvial dos Olhos de Água, near the source of the Rio Alviela, and follows the Aqueduto do Alviela. Some sections overlap with routes of the Centro de BTT de Alcanena – Nascentes dos Olhos D’Água. The GR54 – Grande Rota do Carso also passes through the municipality of Alcanena. Together, the routes offer different vantage points on the landscape and built heritage; specific highlights include the spring and karst window on the PR1, and the aqueduct on the PR8.
