Santo Tirso brings together monastery architecture and industrial history with art, archaeology and trails through green spaces. You can plan your visit around different interests: explore collections and architectural history, choose a circular walking route or set aside time for Parque Urbano Sara Moreira. Visiting a monthly market is another option.
Art and Monastery History
MIEC offers self-guided, free admission in the town of Santo Tirso. MIECST currently displays 54 sculptures across six main areas. This arrangement gives the collection a clear structure. The Centro de Arte Alberto Carneiro’s collection comprises 50 drawings and ten sculptures, donated by Alberto Carneiro to the Município de Santo Tirso in 2015. The centre began its activities with a first exhibition of this permanent collection. It also hosts temporary exhibitions and educational activities.
Another highlight is Mosteiro de São Bento, also known as Mosteiro de Santo Tirso. Its 13th-century Gothic cloister features pointed-arch arcades and intricately decorated capitals. Look closely at the architectural details and you will find more than just the monastery’s name: the arcades and capitals give the cloister its distinctive architectural features.
Museu Municipal Abade Pedrosa is housed in the former guesthouse of Mosteiro de Santo Tirso. The building was constructed between 1737 and 1740. The museum displays archaeological objects from various sites in the region, dating from the Palaeolithic to the present day. The history of the building thus sits alongside a collection spanning different eras. The redesign, inaugurated in 2016, was conceived by architects Álvaro Siza Viera and Eduardo Souto de Moura.
Industrial History Along the Ave
Fábrica de Santo Thyrso was founded in 1896. A tour of its most representative areas begins in the Sala da Máquina, a space used for temporary exhibitions. The permanent exhibition at the Centro Interpretativo da Fábrica presents the company’s history and its connection to the textile industrialisation of the Vale do Ave. The factory’s story thus complements the monastery and museum themes with the region’s industrial development.
Green Spaces and Trails
Parque Urbano Sara Moreira is a 96,274 m² public green space in an oak and cork oak forest above the Rio Ave. Its facilities include walking paths, picnic and seating areas, an amphitheatre and a lake. A cycle path along the Ave connects the park to the town centre of Santo Tirso.
For a longer hike, consider the PR8 STS: this 10.6-kilometre circular route starts and finishes at Praça 25 de Abril. It passes through Santo Tirso and Burgães, as well as several urban parks and quinta estates in the Concelho Santo Tirso. This gives you different ways to spend time outdoors: a circular route with a set start and finish point, and a cycle path linking Parque Urbano Sara Moreira to the town centre. Check route conditions before setting out.
Markets on the Second Saturday
The municipal website, updated in July 2026, lists the Bazar D’Artes & Ofícios as taking place on the second Saturday of the month from 09:00 to 17:00 at Praça Camilo Castelo Branco. The same page lists the Feira de Antiguidades as taking place on the second Saturday of the month from 09:00 to 16:00 at Parque Dona Maria II. The two markets therefore differ both in location and closing time. Check the dates and times in advance if you are planning a visit.
Archaeology in the Concelho
Monte Padrão also adds to the picture of archaeological history in the Concelho Santo Tirso. This site in Monte Córdova is classified as a National Monument and lies a few kilometres southeast of the administrative centre of Santo Tirso. It is an archaeological site; its location and protected status provide a further regional connection to the archaeological objects at Museu Municipal Abade Pedrosa.
