The PR6 Vale do Leça hiking trail runs through Lamelas. Its circular route is 12 kilometres long and is estimated to take four to five hours to walk. This makes the circuit a several-hour focus for planning your day. In addition to this clearly defined hiking opportunity, Lamelas offers local culture, architecture and crafts. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether the circular hike should take up most of a day or whether you are more interested in local history and traditions.

Hiking the PR6 Vale do Leça

At Outeiro Alto, the PR6 offers views across the agriculturally shaped Leça Valley. The Ponte do Arquinho, which the trail passes, offers a different focal point: this very old granite bridge has a single arch. In one case, the cultural landscape shapes the view; in the other, it is the individual granite structure. The view and the bridge’s design thus stand side by side as distinct features of the hike.

At Tanque do Sobradelo, a small water channel carries water from the Ribeira de Pisão stream to a public washhouse. This is another specific feature along the PR6: alongside the landscape views and the bridge, there is also the water system. The link between the stream, channel and washhouse makes the purpose of this installation clear.

Local History and Heritage

The Capela de Santo António is part of Lamelas’ heritage and is in ruins. The fountains of Portela are also among Lamelas’ heritage sites. The old royal road from Porto to Guimarães passed through the village, adding the history of a former route to its architectural heritage. You can explore Lamelas’ past through specific heritage sites or through the historic route.

Casa de Santa Eulália is located in Lugar da Portela in the União das Freguesias de Lamelas e Guimarei. It consists of a group of buildings that retains its original agricultural character, and is listed as a Grade B architectural monument. Unlike the chapel and fountains, the focus here is an ensemble whose character is linked to its original agricultural use.

Crafts and Local Traditions

Weaving remains part of Lamelas’ local craft tradition. The Rancho Folclórico de Santa Eulália de Lamelas helps preserve the area’s historical and cultural heritage. Santo António is a local tradition celebrated with marches and a folk festival. Weaving, folklore and local customs offer different points of focus: craft practice, the preservation of cultural heritage and a festive tradition. If the celebration is important to your travel plans, check in advance when it takes place.

Landscape in Lamelas

Lamelas has a small, densely wooded hill with a colossal, centuries-old eucalyptus tree. This differs from the view along the PR6 at Outeiro Alto: there, the trail opens onto views across the agriculturally shaped Leça Valley; here, the focus is on the wooded hill and a striking individual tree. These are two distinct landscape features: the view across the valley and the wooded hill with its old eucalyptus.
