The Moinhos de Jancido are a distinctive starting point for a stay in Foz do Sousa if you would like to combine industrial heritage with a walking route. Their history goes back more than 200 years; they are the main attraction of the Linha de Midões e Moinhos de Jancido Small Route. This route is in the Freguesia de Foz do Sousa (Gondomar), at one of the entrances to Parque das Serras do Porto. The history of the mills is therefore a clearly identified focus of the route.

Walking and Industrial Heritage

The route follows the former Midões railway line. This gives the walk its own historical dimension in addition to its connection with the mills: it follows a former railway line. PR1 GDM – Linha de Midões e os Moinhos de Jancido is rated easy, Level II. This difficulty rating provides a practical reference for planning your day; check it before setting out. The recommended starting point is beside the Centro de Saúde de Foz do Sousa, where parking is available. Check the information about the starting point and parking again before your arrival.

The History of the Moinhos de Jancido

The eight mills were used to grind corn and other grains into flour. Their age is therefore linked to a specific former purpose: processing various types of grain. Local volunteers from “Amigos dos Moinhos de Jancido” brought the mills, which had previously fallen into disrepair, back to life. Their history thus includes both their former use and their later revival by the volunteers.

One of the mills is built from slate, has a slate-tile roof and stands beside a waterfall. Slate defines both the structure and the roof covering here; the waterfall adds a natural feature to the view of this individual mill. These details distinguish the specific architectural impression from the history and former function of the entire group of mills.

Churches, Bridge and River

Churches in Foz do Sousa are also known for their gilded woodcarving and azulejo tiles. They offer a cultural focus different from that of the mills: sacred art and design take centre stage here, while the mills reflect the history of grain processing and milling. Comparing these cultural highlights can help you distinguish between artistic details and industrial heritage.

The Ponte da Foz do Sousa adds a dimension of construction and transport history to these themes. Engineer Edgar Cardoso designed the bridge; it served as a test structure for the construction of the Ponte da Arrábida and carries traffic on the Estrada Nacional 108. Compared with the route, there is a specific difference: the Linha de Midões follows a former railway line, while the bridge serves road traffic. Two different technical features are therefore side by side: a former railway line used as the basis for a route, and a structure that serves road traffic.

The Rio Sousa is also a feature of the landscape: it flows through Foz do Sousa and Covelo. The river, mills, churches and bridge offer different points of interest for shaping your stay around landscape, industrial history, sacred art or engineering.
