The Douro is a natural heritage site in Gondomar and one of the area’s main attractions for nature tourism, water-based activities and swimming holidays. The river represents not only a landscape, but also different ways to spend time on the water: activities on offer include boat trips, jet skiing, motorboating, sailing, canoeing and rowing. The Marina de Covelo is equipped to accommodate boats.

By the water: bathing areas and water-based activities

At Praia da Lomba, an extensive sandy area is complemented by bathing facilities such as a first-aid station, toilets and a bar. A water sports centre there offers kayaks and SUP boards for hire; the activities on offer also include rides on a motorboat-towed inflatable, wakeboarding and motorboat trips. If you are interested in the Douro as a place for water sports, you’ll find specific options here alongside the boating and paddling activities mentioned more generally.

The Areal de Zebreiros is also on the right bank of the Douro. This recreational area in a rural setting includes an extensive sandy area, showers and bathing facilities. During the bathing season, it has lifeguards and regular monitoring of bathing-water quality. The Areal de Melres, also on the right bank, offers a sandy area and bathing facilities including a first-aid station, toilets and a bar. The facilities described give you a concrete basis for comparing the two areas; the seasonal information about Zebreiros applies to the bathing season.

Gondomar is also part of the regionally protected landscape of Parque das Serras do Porto. The Ciclovia do Polis de Gondomar offers a different kind of experience: the cycle path is 2.6 kilometres long, providing a compact option to consider for a bike ride. The river, protected landscape and cycle path represent different facets of a stay, without forming a single route.

Filigree, architecture and mining history

Filigree art is a distinctive cultural gateway to Gondomar. Since 2016, the Museu Municipal da Filigrana de Gondomar has housed a permanent exhibition dedicated to this art. It shares the Casa Branca de Gramido with the tourist information office. Built in the 18th century, the building is itself historically significant: the Convention of Gramido was signed there in June 1847. Today, Casa Branca also houses the Loja Interativa de Turismo and serves as a cultural venue.

Visitors can explore traditional filigree workshops along the Rota da Filigrana. Groups can take part in a filigree workshop by prior arrangement, learning and trying out traditional techniques in practice under the guidance of a master goldsmith. If you plan to take part, confirm the arrangements for participation and timing in advance. The exhibition and hands-on experience offer two different ways to engage: seeing filigree art and getting to know its techniques for yourself.

The Museu Mineiro de São Pedro da Cova explores another chapter of local history. Established in 1989 in a former building of the Casas da Malta, it is dedicated to preserving, interpreting and revitalising the geological and mining heritage of São Pedro da Cova. The former mining area Antigo Couto Mineiro de São Pedro da Cova is also described as a monument to labour.

In Foz do Sousa, the Linha de Midões e Moinhos de Jancido walking route follows a former railway line that carried coal from the mines to the mouth of the River Sousa. The Moinhos de Jancido are around 200 years old and are now considered the route’s main attraction. The walk thus connects the history of coal transport with the historic mills, without confusing the former railway line with a present-day rail connection.

Other architectural discoveries include the Solar da Bandeirinha, an example of 16th-century civil architecture in Gondomar. Its Salão Nobre features 17th-century Baroque carved woodwork and can be visited by prior appointment. The Multiusos de Gondomar offers a different cultural perspective: designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira, the building is a venue for major events.

Local cuisine and recurring events

Gondomar’s culinary offerings also have different seasonal highlights. The regularly held Festival do Sável e da Lampreia showcases traditional and innovative dishes. Every February, Baguim do Monte hosts the Concurso Gastronómico de Rojões e Papas de Sarrabulho de Baguim do Monte culinary competition. Another annual festival is dedicated to Caldo de Nabos and takes place during Gondomar’s local festivities between September and October. The dates give the latter two events a clear place in the annual calendar.

Coração de Gondomar, a local sweet, adds another element to this culinary picture. It is inspired by regional ingredients such as walnuts, turnips and honey. Together, the dishes and events reveal a different side of the destination from its river activities and industrial culture: the focus here is on local food and recurring culinary occasions.
