Discover Sousel through two distinct themes: the “Fantástica Serra de São Miguel” walking trail and its cultural sites. This gives you a longer hiking route and several independent cultural themes to consider when planning your visit. You can get to know the town through its landscape as well as its religious art and history.
Hiking the Fantástica Serra de São Miguel
The “Fantástica Serra de São Miguel” walking trail is 10.6 km long and takes approximately three hours. It starts in Sousel at the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Orada and follows country roads and paths through centuries-old olive groves. The ascent on the Serra de São Miguel is gentle; at the top there is a swing and a viewpoint for trail users. The route also passes the Praça de Touros “Pedro Louceiro.” If you include the route in your stay, you can set aside approximately three hours; the stated duration is an estimate.
A collection spanning six themed sections
The Museu dos Cristos in Sousel has a collection of 1,486 depictions of Christ from different types, places of origin and periods. These characteristics offer different ways to view the collection: its styles, the origins of the pieces and their place in time. The exhibition presents selected pieces from the collection in six themed sections. A multimedia feature invites visitors to interact. The size of the collection indicates its scope, while the six sections and the multimedia feature show how the exhibition is organized and presented.
Church and local history
The Igreja Matriz de Sousel stands in the town center and is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Graça. It was built at the beginning of the 16th century next to the former castle and at that time belonged to the Commandery of the Order of Avis. Its construction date, connection to the castle and former affiliation with the order place the church in Sousel’s history; its dedication identifies its religious significance.
The Pelourinho de Sousel adds a different kind of historical marker. By Decree No. 23122 of October 10, 1933, it was classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest). While the information about the Igreja Matriz concerns its construction date and former affiliation, the Pelourinho is marked by its formal classification and the specific date.
Market, Romaria and planning
The market in Sousel takes place on the first Sunday of every month. Another date to note is the centuries-old Romaria in honor of Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Serra (São Miguel), held on Easter Monday. It includes a procession around the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. You can therefore plan around the market and the Romaria on different schedules: a fixed Sunday in the monthly calendar or the Easter date.
The Posto de Turismo de Sousel provides visitor information, promotional materials and information about the region. If you are planning your trip around the market or the Romaria, you can check the exact dates in advance. The walking route, the Museu dos Cristos collection and the historical associations of the Igreja Matriz also offer different themes to shape your time in Sousel.
