The Pelourinho de Cano recalls the town charter granted by D. Manuel I in 1512. There are also churches with different architectural features, the Torre de Camões, and dates for markets and festivals. This gives you several ways to plan a visit to Cano: by exploring its local history, focusing on specific architectural features, or arranging your stay around a market or festival.
Town Charters and Local History
The former Paços do Concelho is now the seat of the Junta de Freguesia; the pillory stands beside it. The monument recalls the charter granted in 1512, but was reconstructed later: in April 1968, it was officially installed in the square in front of the former Paços. The two dates therefore refer to different chapters—1512 to the town charter and April 1968 to the reconstruction and installation of the pillory.
Two Churches, Different Architectural Styles
The Igreja Matriz de Cano is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Graça. Its broad, tall façade has a marble portico and a marble pediment. The Igreja da Misericórdia de Cano dates from the 16th century. Its interior has a single nave, a wooden ceiling and a masonry main altar. For an architectural comparison, the façade features of the Matriz can thus be contrasted with details about the Misericórdia’s construction date and interior.
Torre de Camões and Rota dos Recintos Cerimoniais
The Torre de Camões is one of Cano’s heritage sites. A few metres away are the remains of an aqueduct and a basin. These nearby traces provide another tangible link to the town’s history. The northern Rota dos Recintos Cerimoniais also has a clearly identified connection to Cano: its route ends there at Recinto de Rouca 7.
Planning for Market Days and Festivals
The markets follow different schedules. The Mercado do Peixe takes place every Wednesday morning in Praça da República. Cano also has a monthly market on the fourth Sunday; O Mercado vai à Praça takes place on the third Sunday of each month. The two Sunday markets therefore take place on different dates. If a particular market is important to your trip, check the date again before you travel.
The festivals also take place at different times. The Festa do Dia da Freguesia takes place on the last weekend of June. The traditional religious festivals in honour of Nossa Senhora da Graça usually take place on the last weekend of July. You can therefore choose from weekday and Sunday market dates, as well as festival weekends; the religious festivals are usually held in late July.
Choose Your Travel Dates
First consider whether a market or festival date is a key factor in your stay, or whether you would rather focus on local history and architecture. If your trip depends on a specific event date, check it in advance; it is particularly advisable to recheck market days.
