From the heights of Castelo de Vide, there are sweeping views across the Alentejo landscape and small villages in the surrounding fields. Set against this perspective is a long history of buildings and monuments: the Judiaria, chapels and fortifications tell different chapters, while the Menir da Meada and the Anta dos Pombais take us further back in time. In this way, landscape and cultural history come to the fore in different forms.

Judiaria, Chapels and Fountains

The historic Judiaria dates back to the 13th century, to the time of D. Dinis. The Capela do Salvador do Mundo also dates from the late 13th century. Inside are blue-and-white azulejo panels. The Capela de SĂŁo Roque has two building phases in its history: it was built in the 15th century and rebuilt in the 18th century. These dates offer a glimpse into different historical periods, from the azulejos of the Capela do Salvador to the two building phases of SĂŁo Roque.

The Fonte da Vila was built in the 15th century. The Senhora da Penha was already in existence in 1570; its construction was paid for by the municipality. Both dates add to the picture of the historic buildings, though not all of these places date from the same period.

Fortifications and a Marked Route

The bastioned fortifications of Castelo de Vide comprise six half-bastions and two forts. Near the castle is the Centro Interpretativo da Fortificação Abaluartada, which was redesigned in 2021. Together, the fortifications and the interpretation centre provide two concrete points of reference for exploring the history of fortification.

The sequence of stops along the marked route also provides guidance: it reaches the Igreja do Bom Jesus before the ascent begins on the northeastern slope of the mountain of Castelo de Vide. The Anta dos Pombais can be reached via an optional detour from the marked route. This allows you to plan the main route and detour as distinct options.

Monuments and the Natural Park

The Menir da Meada was erected during the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. It is described as the largest fully human-worked menhir on the Iberian Peninsula. Its dating and this description offer two different perspectives on the monument: its early origins and how it is classified.

The Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede includes areas within the municipalities of Arronches, Castelo de Vide, Marvão and Portalegre. Hiking trails in the natural park offer insight into geological, climatic, geomorphological, soil-related and human aspects of the region. For nature enthusiasts, they offer more than a view of the landscape: their themes also cover the region’s natural conditions and human influences.

Thermal Waters and Local Cuisine

Castelo de Vide is known for its thermal springs, whose water is believed to have therapeutic properties. Local cuisine also offers discoveries: Cabrito de cachafrito is considered a specialty of Castelo de Vide. Aldrabado de castanha is a traditional sweet made with chestnuts, based on an old local recipe. A local specialty and a chestnut dessert thus offer two distinct examples.

The Castelo de Vide Tourist Office is located at Praça D. Pedro V, 7320-113 Castelo de Vide.
