São João das Lampas brings together architectural history and hiking, with practical starting points for planning your trip. The parish church is classified as a Monument of Public Interest; two hiking options have different route details and starting points in the town. There is also a remarkable archaeological collection and the nearby coast. First consider whether culture, a planned hike or a trip to the seaside will shape your stay.
Culture between architectural history and religious tradition
The Igreja de São João Baptista and its churchyard are classified as a Monument of Public Interest. The church has late Gothic origins and was remodelled in the early 16th century. This architectural history brings together two historical layers and offers a concrete introduction to the cultural heritage of São João das Lampas.
The Museu Arqueológico de São Miguel de Odrinhas houses the only three Etruscan sarcophagi found in Portugal. Its archaeological focus therefore complements the story of local architecture with an exceptional collection. The museum's postal address is 2705-739 São João das Lampas, and it can be planned as a separate cultural stop during your stay.
Religious traditions are also linked to historical and geographical details. The Círio dos Saloios is said to have begun in 1430; the first brotherhood of this Círio was founded in 1432. On 7 September, the procession travelled from the parish of São Domingos de Rana via Sintra to São João das Lampas. This is distinct from the celebrations in honour of Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel: they are among the oldest festivals in the Sintra municipality and are celebrated in São João das Lampas. Those interested in religious history will find both a long-standing tradition and a specifically described processional route here.
Hiking: distinguishing between a circular route and an event
The Short Route 9 – Rota das Aldeias is a circular hiking trail of approximately 13.5 kilometres. It starts and finishes at Largo do Coreto de São João das Lampas. Along the route, you can see pastures, small plots bounded by dry-stone walls and hedges, and areas covered with pine trees. Its shared start and finish point and approximate length make it easy to plan as a circular walk; the landscape combines open pastureland with smaller enclosed plots and pine-covered areas.
A different format was offered by the 12th Trilho das Lampas, held on 9 May 2026. The event included a 20-kilometre race (TL), a 13-kilometre race (TC), and a non-competitive walk. The 2026 route started and finished at Largo de São João das Lampas, followed the Ribeira da Samarra catchment area, and ran largely through Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The format and route may differ in future editions. This presents two different ways to plan: the Rota das Aldeias, described as a circular route, and a date-specific event with several formats.
The coast and getting to the museum
Praia da Samarra, set between cliffs, lies close to São João das Lampas. Access involves descending a cliffside path; sturdy footwear is recommended. If you plan this coastal trip, take the descent into account when preparing. For museum visits, Carris Metropolitana route 1633 stops at Av. Prof. D. Fernando de Almeida, 87. The route runs between Portela de Sintra and Ericeira; check the departure times for the day of your visit in advance.
Choose hotels according to the reason for your trip
Search for hotels based on the itinerary you actually plan to follow, and also consider whether you have a specific date in mind for the Trilho das Lampas.
