Green spaces, a network of walking and cycling paths, and specific cultural sites give Rio De Mouro a range of starting points for planning your trip. The Parque Urbano da Rinchoa–Fitares focuses on landscape and park facilities, while the Parque Linear da Ribeira da Laje forms a green corridor between urban civil parishes. A church, museum and cultural routes complement these outdoor themes with local and cultural history. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether green spaces, heritage or rail connections should take priority during your stay.
Green Spaces and Paths in Rio De Mouro
The Parque Urbano da Rinchoa–Fitares was inaugurated on 24 May 2015 and covers approximately 12 hectares. Its natural landscape features diverse fauna and flora associated with riverside areas. Facilities include picnic tables, bicycle racks, a leisure shelter and information panels. Nature and park facilities are both central here; this distinguishes the park from a linear corridor, whose defining feature is the connection between two places.
The Parque Linear da Ribeira da Laje connects Mem Martins and Rio de Mouro through a network of walking and cycling paths. It forms a green corridor between the urban civil parishes of Rio de Mouro and Mem Martins in the Municipality of Sintra. The difference from the Parque Urbano da Rinchoa–Fitares can help guide your choice: there, the area, landscape and facilities are the defining features; here, it is the linear connection between the two places. If you are planning to walk or cycle, you can consider this corridor as a distinct local feature.
Matinha de Fitares is also a green space, but has its own focus: it is located in the town centre of Fitares and is intended to combine recreation and sport for people living in the civil parish of Rio de Mouro. Its purpose adds recreation and sport to the different green-space themes. This makes it possible to distinguish three themes: the natural landscape and facilities of the Parque Urbano, the connection between places at the Parque Linear, and the recreational and sporting purpose of Matinha.
Church, Museum and Local History
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Belém is the parish church of Rio de Mouro. It was built in 1563 at the initiative of Cardinal D. Henrique and entrusted to the Hieronymites. The church therefore has a clear historical connection: its history includes both the cardinal’s initiative and its entrustment to the Hieronymite order.
The Casa-Museu de Leal da Câmara offers a different, biographical perspective. It is located in the house where Leal da Câmara lived from 1930 until his death in 1948. The artist’s Saloio collections have been on display at the Núcleo dos Saloios since 21 July 2003. Unlike the parish church’s founding history, the focus here is on an artist’s life and collections. This gives culture-focused travellers a choice between an emphasis on church history and one on biography and collections.
