Gradil can be explored through a range of themes: the Centro de Recuperação do Lobo-ibérico is dedicated to wolf conservation, while wine tasting at Quinta de Sant’Ana introduces grape varieties from Portugal and abroad. There are also forts belonging to the Torres Vedras defensive lines, a classified church and chapels. Anyone planning a stay will find both visits with specific booking requirements and cultural sites that can be understood through their names, classification and dates.

Wolves and visitor requirements

The Centro de Recuperação do Lobo-ibérico provides a suitable environment under human care for wolves that cannot live in the wild. The focus is on caring for these animals. Visits require a mandatory advance booking followed by confirmation; a maximum of 25 people are allowed per visit. An advance booking is therefore not the final step: remember to allow for the required confirmation when planning your visit.

Wine tasting at Quinta de Sant’Ana

At Quinta de Sant’Ana, visitors can taste wines made from Portuguese grape varieties as well as carefully selected international varieties. The range of grape varieties therefore covers two categories of origin. Tastings should be booked 48 hours in advance. As booking requirements may change, check the reservation terms before your trip.

The Torres Vedras defensive lines

Forte do Cabeço da Acheira, also known as Forte do Alto do Cheira and Obra N.º 62 of the 2nd Defensive Line, is located in Portela da Ginja in the parish of Gradil, municipality of Mafra, Lisbon District. Forte do Canto do Muro da Tapada Nacional de Mafra is also known as Forte do Valério, Forte do Canto do Muro da Tapada and Obra N.º 64 of the 2nd Defensive Line. It is located in Casal do Abade, also in the parish of Gradil, municipality of Mafra, Lisbon District.

The work numbers identify the two forts as individual works of the 2nd Defensive Line. The broader context is provided by the Torres Vedras defensive lines, which comprise 152 military works built between 1809 and 1812. Gradil is listed as one of the associated places in the municipality of Mafra. This places the two named forts within a wider historical context.

Church and chapels

The Igreja matriz de SĂŁo Silvestre do Gradil is classified as an immovable property of public interest (IIP), meaning a cultural heritage asset of public interest. This classification distinguishes the church as recognised cultural heritage from the military works of the defensive lines.

A small chapel built as an expression of popular devotion is dedicated to SĂŁo JoĂŁo Baptista.

There is a small chapel dating from 1633 at Quinta de Sant’Ana. It features a Baroque depiction of Sant’Ana and 18th-century tile panels. The date of the chapel and the later date of the tile panels provide two distinct chronological reference points for this religious heritage site.

Comparing booking requirements

When planning your visit, it is important to note the difference between the two sets of requirements: the Centro requires an advance booking followed by confirmation, while wine tastings should be booked 48 hours in advance. Each visit to the Centro is also limited to a maximum of 25 people. Check the booking requirements for the tasting before you travel.
