Carvoeira can be explored via two very different hiking routes: PR11_MFR – Do Lizandro ao Forte do Zambujal follows unpaved paths along the river valley and leads to a historic fort. PR10_MFR – Paisagens de São Julião starts and ends beside an Ermida, with views of the river mouth, beach and ocean. There is also a medieval bridge, the beach landscape at Foz do Lizandro, and a local pastry sold only by pre-order.

Hiking between the River Valley and the Coast

PR11_MFR – Do Lizandro ao Forte do Zambujal begins beside the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Ó. It follows unpaved paths along the valley of the Rio Lizandro and leads to Forte do Zambujal. The valley is defined by an agricultural mosaic: fertile soils and irrigation are associated with the predominant cultivation of vegetables. The route therefore passes through a landscape where the river and agriculture belong together. The Cruz das Alminhas, built in 1779, is also located on PR11.

PR10_MFR – Paisagens de São Julião starts and ends beside the Ermida de São Julião. The Ermida was built in the 18th century on the site of a possible 16th-century hermitage. Along the route, you reach a cliff above a meander of the Rio Lizandro. From there, you can see the river mouth and its beach. Farther along, the trail reaches the cliffs of São Julião, where the local flora accompanies views of the ocean.

For choosing a route, a direct comparison may help: PR11 connects unpaved paths in the river valley with Forte do Zambujal; PR10 focuses on the Ermida and coastal views. Whether you would rather take in the river landscape and agricultural mosaic or the meander, river mouth and cliffs, these differences can guide your choice.

Churches, Bridge and Military History

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Ó is located near the mouth of the Ribeira de Cheleiros and has a sundial dating from 1763. The medieval Ponte da Senhora do Ó in the Freguesia da Carvoeira was built to connect the two banks of the Lizandro. The church and bridge thus represent different aspects of architectural history: the sundial is a dated detail on the church building, while the bridge is defined by its connection between the two riverbanks.

Forte do Zambujal is considered a strategic point in the defence against the Third Napoleonic Invasion. Forte de São Julião is also associated with this period: it was built in a star shape at the beginning of the 19th century and incorporated into the second line of defence of the Linhas de Torres against the Third Napoleonic Invasion. Another dated monument is the Cruzeiro de Valbom, from 1794; its graffiti refer to the Passion of Christ.

Foz do Lizandro: River Mouth and Beach

Foz do Lizandro beach is in the Freguesia da Carvoeira. The Rio Lizandro flows into the sea there, and the natural landscape is closely connected to the river. A raised wooden walkway runs along the riverfront and seafront, connecting the businesses there to a large car park. The beach has a sports area on the sand and in the sea; lifeguards supervise the beach, which also has an SOS-Praia system. Check current beach conditions before visiting.

A Local Speciality

Pão do Ó is a dark Pão de Ló made from an old local recipe. A local café sells it only by pre-order. If you would like to try this speciality, arrange your order directly with the café before your trip.
