Atalaia de Cima offers two distinct approaches to planning a trip: the history of Nossa Senhora da Guia and the Grande Rota, which takes in fields, greenhouses and the coast. For cultural history, there are two clearly distinguishable building phases; the route offers another perspective on the landscape and coast. This lets you decide whether architectural history or walking should be the focus of your stay.
Church, Dedication and Local History
In the 16th century, a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Guia was built in Atalaia de Cima. The original chapel was replaced by the new Igreja Nossa Senhora da Guia. This church was inaugurated in 1977 and designed by architect Lucínio Cruz. This makes it possible to distinguish the historic chapel from the later church building in terms of both time and architecture: the dedication is evident in both names.
In nearby Atalaia, the band of the Associação Musical da Atalaia gave its first public performance on 6 September 1987 at the festivities in honour of Nossa Senhora da Guia. The shared connection to Nossa Senhora da Guia links the history of the church and music; however, the performance in Atalaia and the church in Atalaia de Cima are associated with different places.
Coast and Shellfish Farming
The Miradouro da Praia do Porto das Barcas offers views of the beaches and coastline. This adds a scenic highlight alongside the church and festival connections: here, the focus is on coastal views; there, on architectural and musical history.
Porto das Barcas is home to one of the largest concentrations of shellfish farms in Europe. The maritime connection is brought to life on the Lourinhã Litoral route, which includes a coffee stop at Praia de Porto das Barcas. The itinerary also mentions a visit to the shellfish farms of Marisqueira “Frutos do Mar”; this is only possible with advance booking. Before your visit, confirm your booking and check whether the published itinerary works for your date, as route information does not necessarily reflect current operations.
Sections of the Grande Rota
The Grande Rota is another way to explore the surrounding area on foot. Running between farmland and greenhouses, it passes parallel to Porto de Barcas and continues to the village of Atalaia de Cima. From Atalaia de Cima, the route approaches the coast again and heads towards Praia da Peralta. Check route conditions before setting out on a hike.
The Lourinhã Litoral lists specific stops; the Grande Rota describes landscape features and directions for a hike. For your planning, this means the difference between a stop on a route and the trail itself: consider whether you would rather prioritise a particular stop or the hike.
