At the cliffs of Praia de Paimogo, coastal scenery and Earth’s history meet: they contain fossils from the Upper Jurassic, including dinosaur fossils, dinosaur eggs and embryo bones. Plants are also part of this coastal landscape. Several species that are endemic to Portugal grow on the cliffs. Lourinhã can thus be explored through specific discoveries—from geological traces and nature to architecture, collections and signposted routes.

Coastal Scenery and Fossils

Praia de Paimogo offers a different way to experience the sea: its waters are calm and suitable for underwater exploration. The cliffs provide a distinct focus of their own. Dinosaur fossils and the remains of eggs and embryos make the geological history here especially vivid—without the need to invent an excursion or add further explanation.

At Praia da Areia Branca, the focus is on a different combination of landscape and activities. The beach is located at the mouth of the Rio Grande, beside a strip of dunes covered in plants. Mini golf, surfing and bodyboarding lessons are also offered there. As individual providers may change, check the current lesson offerings in advance if you are planning one of these activities. The details about Paimogo and Areia Branca show two distinct coastal features: fossils and calm waters here, a river mouth with a plant-covered strip of dunes and a range of activities there.

Exploring on Foot

If you like to plan your outings on foot, Lourinhã has four signposted walking routes: the Rota dos Dinossauros, the Rota Vila da Lourinhã, the Rota Lourinhã Interior and the Rota Lourinhã Litoral. Their names make the choice specific and help you include the routes as individual options in your travel plans. You can choose one of the four named options rather than planning your stay around walking in general.

Fort, Churches and History

Forte de Paimogo is a small bastioned fort in the Baroque military style. It was built in 1674 and is also known as Nossa Senhora dos Anjos de Paimogo. By Decree No. 41191 of 18 July 1957, it was classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” (Property of Public Interest). Its year of construction, architecture and precisely dated classification give the fort a clearly defined historical context.

Another historical thread leads to the Igreja e Convento de Santo António. The complex traces its origins to a community of Capuchin Recollects founded in 1598. Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo offers an older point of reference: it is a Gothic church dating from the 14th century. These details offer different perspectives on architectural and religious history, without combining the buildings into a single shared story.

Museums and exhibitions offer their own distinct features, too. Museu da Lourinhã has museum areas devoted to archaeology, ethnography and palaeontology. At Dino Parque Lourinhã’s activity pavilion, visitors can try palaeontological activities. This brings palaeontology to life as an activity as well as through the coast’s geological traces. On 3 April 2025, GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ recognised BRICKOPOLIS LOURINHÃ as the world’s largest LEGO® brick diorama; the diorama covers more than 70 m². The dated record title and the area covered give this exhibition a scale all its own within the cultural offering.

A Local Designation of Origin

The DOP Lourinhã designation of origin is part of the area’s culinary identity. It is reserved exclusively for the production of high-quality Aguardentes. It thus refers to a narrowly defined product and is not simply a general label for products from the region.

If you are looking for a hotel in Lourinhã, you can make your choice based on the discoveries you want to shape your trip: coastal scenery and Earth’s history, walking routes, historic buildings or museum themes.
