In Amadora, history can be explored on very different scales: an aqueduct defines a long main section, while tombs, a Roman villa and historic houses bring individual eras to life. Around 8 km of the 14 km-long main section of the Aqueduto Geral das Ăguas Livres lies within the MunicĂpio da Amadora. This structure is a striking starting point for discovering the many facets of the areaâs cultural heritage.
The Aqueduct and Its Architectural Details
In the Freguesia Ăguas Livres, the aqueduct has 19 arches. The tallest is 18 m high and has a span of 8.5 m. The Aqueduto das Ăguas Livres, along with its branches and associated components, is classified in its entirety as a National Monument. These figures describe a specific section of the structure; the classification also includes its branches and associated components.
Archaeological Traces and Historic Houses
The excavated structures of the Villa Romana da Quinta da Bolacha tell a story spanning several periods: they were built in the 3rd century, altered in the 4th century and inhabited until the middle of the 4th century. The NecrĂłpole de Carenque offers a different perspective on the past. It consists of three collective tombs cut into limestone outcrops. By prior arrangement, the Museu Municipal de Arqueologia offers guided tours of the villa for groups and schools from the MunicĂpio and beyond.
The historic houses also offer distinct highlights. The Casa Roque Gameiro was built between 1898 and 1901 as the home of watercolour painter Alfredo Roque Gameiro and his family. The dining room features a remarkable tile design by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro with naturalistic themes. The Casal da Falagueira de Cima is a 16th-century manor house of historical, architectural and archaeological significance. It belonged to the Order of Malta, as attested by boundary stones bearing the Orderâs cross.
The Ponte Filipina, also known as Ponte de Carenque de Baixo, is a 17th-century structure of historical and architectural value. Currently, only pedestrians use the bridge. As traffic regulations may change, it is best to check them before your visit.
Museums, Exhibitions and Cultural Life
The Museu da Amadora comprises several locations and facilities: the NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico do Casal da Falagueira is the main site; the network also includes the NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico da NecrĂłpole de Carenque, the NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico do Moinho do Penedo, the cultural stores and the Casa Roque Gameiro. The museumâs permanent exhibitions cover early human settlement, rural history, the Aqueduto das Ăguas Livres and the history of aviation in Amadora. Exhibits may change over time.
The NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico do Moinho do Penedo is the only windmill in the MunicĂpio da Amadora open to the public for visits. Another local feature can be seen in todayâs Jardim da Mina: the cave with the Mina dâĂgua, which gave its name to Bairro Parque da Mina and the Freguesia da Mina. The Mina dâĂgua is classified as a Monument of Municipal Interest.
The Recreios da Amadora is a cultural venue for theatre, dance, music, cinema and public commemorative events. Its façade is classified as a property of municipal interest. The Galeria Municipal Artur Bual organises exhibitions and cultural projects. Bedeteca da Amadora and Biblioteca Municipal Fernando Piteira Santos add to the cultural offering with story times, workshops, reading clubs and exhibitions; individual activities and dates may vary.
Amadora BD is an annual international festival celebrating comics from around the world. It includes the annual PrĂ©mios de Banda Desenhada da Amadora, which recognise outstanding Portuguese and international comics, provided they have been published in Portugal. The main venue includes 950 mÂČ of exhibition space, an equally large retail area, spaces for autograph sessions, presentations and publications, and a 250 mÂČ gaming area. The layout may change from one edition to the next.
Parks and Outdoor Trails
Parque Aventura covers around 5 ha and offers green spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. The Ribeira da Falagueira runs the entire length of the park. Facilities include a minigolf course, a traffic education park for children and large playgrounds. Parque Central has a different focus: it offers family-oriented recreational areas and three distinct zones, the Jardim Zeca Afonso, the Jardim do Lago and the sports zone.
There are walking routes of varying lengths and difficulty levels. The linear route Os Aquedutos na Amadora, Percurso C, is 4.5 km long, easy and starts at Parque Aventura. The linear route De SĂŁo BrĂĄs Ă Buraca also starts there: it is the same length but is rated easy to moderate. At 16.2 km, the linear route Da Buraca Ă s MĂŁes de Ăgua is considerably longer, rated moderate and passes through Amadoraâs aqueduct landscape. This offers a comparison between two routes of equal length with different difficulty ratings and a longer route. Check route conditions before setting out.
Parque das Artes e do Desporto has a 3 km circular route and space for walking, running and cycling. Jardim Amadora Este has a cycle path and a two-lane pedestrian path. It starts at Amadora-Este metro station and runs along Estrada dos Salgados to Alfornelos.
