Salir de Matos can be explored through two very specific travel interests: activities along the Caminhos da Rainha network of trails and architectural details at churches, the Fonte de Salir de Matos and the Ponte Romana. The trail network offers several ways to get around; the buildings feature details ranging from a prominent porch to 17th-century tiles. In mid-July, the annual “Conhece Salir de Matos?!” adds a time-specific occasion. You can therefore choose the focus of your trip based on outdoor activities, architecture or an event.
A trail network offering different ways to get around
The Caminhos da Rainha trail network also includes Salir de Matos. The network includes hiking trails, trail-running routes, and routes for mountain bikes and road bikes. It was developed for more experienced hikers and cyclists as well as for people who are less accustomed to long distances. Two questions will help you make your initial choice: Which activity would you like to plan for, and how familiar are you with longer distances? The specific route remains the deciding factor, as conditions can vary.
Churches and decorative details
A porch defines the exterior of the Igreja Paroquial in Salir de Matos. The Igreja Matriz de Santo AntĂłnio is also located in Salir de Matos. Inside the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, there are 17th-century tiles with various motifs. This offers different perspectives for a cultural stay: exterior appearance, period of construction and interior decoration.
The Fonte de Salir de Matos is decorated with tiles featuring floral motifs. This draws attention to an ornamental detail at a fountain, while the Capela features interior decoration in the form of 17th-century tiles. These distinctive features offer points of comparison for travellers interested in design and religious architecture.
The Ponte Romana
The Ponte Romana is a structure of Romanesque design and is in good condition. The freguesias of Alvorninha, Salir de Matos and Vidais meet at this location. Visitors interested in the bridge can therefore consider both its architectural style and its specific connection to the three freguesias. As its condition may change, we recommend checking for current information before visiting.
“Conhece Salir de Matos?!” in July
Since 2014, the Junta de Freguesia de Salir de Matos has held the annual “Conhece Salir de Matos?!” event. It takes place in mid-July in the car park of the Junta de Freguesia. The programme includes exhibition and demonstration stands as well as food and drink stalls; the programme may vary from one edition to the next. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check the specific dates of the planned edition.
