Coimbrão can be explored through three distinct themes: Lagoa da Ervedeira, the sandy beach of Praia do Pedrógão and regional culture. The 600-metre-long lagoon is in the parish of Coimbrão; Praia do Pedrógão is characterised by an extensive sandy beach and the Arte Xávega fishing tradition. When planning your trip, you can focus on nature, the coast and local culture separately.

Lagoa da Ervedeira: Water and Trails

At Lagoa da Ervedeira, there is a bar, a picnic area and a wooden walkway. Two areas are used for swimming; sport fishing and canoeing are also practised at the lagoon. This offers a range of activities for a stay by the water, while the bar and picnic area provide further options for planning your visit.

The Rota dos Medronheiros runs around the lagoon and follows forest paths almost exclusively. A circular trail at Lagoa runs along the walkways and past birdwatching hides. The Estação de Biodiversidade at Lagoa da Ervedeira introduces visitors to 19 bird species native to the area, adding a focus on birdlife to the nature themes.

Praia do Pedrógão and Arte Xávega

Praia do Pedrógão in Coimbrão offers an extensive sandy beach. It holds the Blue Flag, the “Accessible Beach” award and the “Qualidade de Ouro” award. The beach is also connected to the Estrada Atlântica and an extensive cycle path. When planning, you can take these awards and connections into account alongside the beach itself.

The centuries-old traditional fishing practice of Arte Xávega continues at Praia do Pedrógão. When sea conditions permit, you can watch the tradition there. This caveat is relevant when planning such an experience: whether it is possible to watch depends on sea conditions.

Crafts, Festivals and Regional Specialities

Coimbrão’s traditional crafts include wicker baskets made from twigs, wool work and textiles made with four or six needles. Fans made from seagull feathers are also part of the tradition, but are made to order. The other crafts mentioned can be purchased at festivals, markets and specialist shops. Rancho Folclórico do Coimbrão “Flores de Verde Pinho” organises the Festival de Folclore do Coimbrão; the 43rd edition is scheduled for 2026.

The local food culture also offers a variety of points of interest: Morcelas do Coimbrão are a regional speciality made with blood and rice. Broa de Milho is considered a traditional speciality, whose production is kept alive only by older residents. The Capela de São Tiago contains images of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré and Saint James. Together, these examples show that, alongside the beach and lagoon, Coimbrão also offers craft, culinary and cultural themes to consider when planning a trip.
