The Aqueduto da Usseira runs from the spring near Usseira to the Chafariz da Praça de Santa Maria in Óbidos. The structure is six kilometres long, three of which run underground. At 6.2 kilometres, the Rota do Aqueduto is a separate route, estimated to take about two hours. The figures describe different things: the aqueduct’s total length and the length of a route that follows it. Together with viewpoints, an architectural detail and local festival traditions, they offer several ways to plan a stay in Usseira.
Aqueduct and Rota do Aqueduto
The route starts and ends next to the Junta de Freguesia in Usseira; the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário is near the beginning and end of the route. At first, it passes the Mãe de Água and then follows the aqueduct. The 6.2-kilometre route includes 175 metres of elevation gain and is rated difficulty level II; the estimated walking time is about two hours. For planning your day, these are separate details: the time is an estimate, while the elevation gain and rating describe the route independently. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
Views and Washhouses
Along old farm tracks, the route offers views of Vila de Óbidos, the Atlantic Ocean and the Berlengas Islands. Another viewpoint is Talefe: from there, the entire Serra dos Candeeiros range is visible to the east. Talefe is near the recently restored washhouses, maintained by the Junta de Freguesia; a mural honouring the washerwomen can be found there. The route and viewpoint offer different highlights: views along old farm tracks in one case, and the Serra and the mural in the other. Check the condition of the washhouses on site before planning your visit.
Chapel and Architectural Heritage
The Capela de Santa Luzia also offers a tangible detail of cultural heritage. Its stone pulpit dates from the 17th century and is said, according to local tradition, to have come from the Convento S. Miguel de Gaeiras. Windmills are also among Usseira’s notable architectural heritage features. For the pulpit, the specific details are its material, date and traditional provenance; the windmills are highlighted for their significance as architectural heritage.
Festivals and Food Events
The Festa das Sopas is a recurring food event. At its second edition, on 7 April 2024, visitors could sample more than a dozen different soups. The Festejos de Santa Luzia take place on the night of 12 to 13 December. They include a bonfire and a communal dinner with grilled meat, grilled sardines, bread and wine; the precise arrangements may vary. The two events have different focuses: the selection of soups at one, and the bonfire and communal meal at the other. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates in advance; the precise arrangements for the Festejos may also vary.
