The PR10 Rota dos Moinhos leads through pine forests, vineyards and orchards up to the Serra da Amoreira. Along the way, preserved ruins, a park and events with specific dates provide further pointers for planning your trip. Whether you choose Amoreira mainly for hiking or for a particular event theme will shape the focus of your stay.
Hiking the PR10 Rota dos Moinhos
The PR10 is 5.5 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 126 metres, is classified as difficulty level II and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The approximate walking time helps you fit the hike into your daily schedule. The route starts and ends at Praça Dr. Azeredo Perdigão in Amoreira; before setting off, it is advisable to check the local signs.
On the way up to the Serra da Amoreira, pine forests, vineyards and orchards alternate. At the summit are the emblematic windmills. The route also connects to the Ecovia do Furadouro and the Ecovia do Rio Real. This means the specific reference points include both the destination on the Serra and two named connections in the route network.
The PR10 leads towards Capela de Jesus Maria José. The Guarita is a landmark for the return to Amoreira. It is part of the Casa dos Seixos and a link to local architecture and history.
Local history and leisure areas
Ruins remain from the former Praça de Touros de Amoreira. They are a specific historic landmark in the town. Amoreira Library is located at Praça Dr. Azeredo Perdigão, in the Junta de Freguesia building. Since the PR10 also starts and ends there, hikers have another clear reference point for orientation at the same square.
In 2021, Parque do Rio in Amoreira had an outdoor fitness trail, a children's playground, a basketball court, a volleyball court, a football pitch and a picnic area. If you want to make a visit to any of these facilities a firm part of your plans, check their current status locally. The park offers a different kind of leisure activity from the PR10: here, play, sports and picnics are the focus, while the route offers a marked trail with specified distances.
Events by year and theme
The Festival da Ginja de Óbidos reached its 11th edition in 2026. In Amoreira, the festival took place from 27 to 29 June 2025 and featured gastronomy and handicrafts. For a trip centred on an event, the year and specific edition matter; plan your dates around the programme for the edition you want to attend.
The programme for Moinhos Abertos 2026 included workshops on the theme “O PÃO DE ONTEM, HOJE” and the “MÃO NA MASSA À ANTIGA” competition. A visit to Moinho dos Hipólitos was also scheduled for the event days. The event themes are easy to distinguish: the festival featured gastronomy and handicrafts, while Moinhos Abertos offered different bread-related programme items, including workshops and a competition.
You can plan your travel dates according to whether you mainly want to hike or attend a particular event programme.
