A medieval tower on the ruins of a Roman villa: the Complexo Monumental de Santiago da Guarda brings together different eras in one place. The riverside landscape and trails also shape the view of Ansião. Between the Nabão and the mountain ranges of the Serra de Sicó, cultural history and landscape sit close together, offering discoveries for a range of interests.

Layers of history in Ansião

The Complexo Monumental de Santiago da Guarda is housed in the former palace of the Counts of Castelo Melhor and includes an adjoining medieval tower. A tower structure with a medieval base was rebuilt on the ruins of a Roman villa dating from the 4th and 5th centuries. At this same complex, a former palace, medieval architecture and traces of a Roman villa come together.

The Igreja Matriz de Ansião also points to a later period: the church dates from the late 16th century, and the year 1593 is inscribed above its main portal. Together with surviving evidence and heritage from prehistoric, Roman and Arab times, it offers another starting point for exploring the town’s long history.

By the Nabão: water and trails

Olhos d’Água are seasonal springs that feed the Nabão River. The Parque Verde do Nabão provides access to the riverside: its three-kilometre trail is intended for walking and cycling and runs from Olhos d’Água to the junction with the IC8. The changing course of the water and the trail offers a practical way to experience the riverside landscape.

The park combines the trail with other facilities, including a skate park, playground, fitness area and exercise circuit, as well as a picnic area, toilets and parking. Those who want to spend time outdoors and enjoy different activities will find several options within the same park.

The Rota Carmelita – Variante Santiago da Guarda offers a different scale. This 111-kilometre pilgrimage route passes through the municipalities of Coimbra, Condeixa-a-Nova, Penela, Ansião, Alvaiázere and Ourém. This makes it possible to compare two very different route lengths: the three-kilometre trail by the Nabão and a route that crosses several municipalities. The distances offer a point of reference without specifying a walking time.

Landscape and regional cuisine

In the Sicó region, the karst landscape is marked by sinkholes, shafts, limestone pavements and caves. These formations arose through the long-term interaction of water and limestone. Together with Ansião’s location between the Nabão and the mountain ranges of the Serra de Sicó, this offers another perspective on the area: it is not only individual buildings but also geological formations that tell the story of a landscape shaped over a long period.

The wider Sicó region also comes into view through its cuisine. Queijo do Rabaçal and Chícharo are highlighted as regional foods and traditional gastronomy products in the area around the Sicó Outdoor Center. Regional food culture thus complements the historical and landscape themes, without losing sight of Ansião as a destination in its own right.

Visitor information

You can reach Ansião via the A1: leave the motorway at the Pombal or Condeixa-a-Nova exit and continue along the IC8. Since road routes may change over time, it is a good idea to check the route before setting out.

The Posto de Turismo de Ansião provides information on directions, opening hours and visitor suggestions for trails and attractions. For planning, you can ask there about the places and activities that interest you. The Sicó Outdoor Center, with locations in Ansião and Alvaiázere, can be reached by bus from cities such as Coimbra, Leiria, Pombal and Tomar; check suitable connections and timetables before travelling.

The Sicó Outdoor Center Welcome Centers in Ansião and Alvaiázere have water refill points, toilets, changing rooms and a bicycle service station. When planning your visit, you can consider both the cultural and historical attractions and the trails and facilities offered by the outdoor center.
