The PR3 – SEI/ROTA DOS SOCALCOS starts in Cabeça, but choosing a travel theme need not stop at the landscape. Historic churches, the Ponte do Porto and Cabeça Aldeia Natal offer other points of entry: the former ecclesiastical role of a building, the shape of a bridge and a seasonal community event. When choosing Cabeça as a destination, you can first decide whether the landscape, architectural history or the event will shape your stay.
Landscape and the terraced route
The PR3 – SEI/ROTA DOS SOCALCOS passes through a valley with steep green slopes and extensive agricultural terraces. This combination of terrain and land use gives the route a distinctive connection to the landscape: the slopes shape the valley, while the terraces make its agricultural layout visible. If landscape and hiking are your first considerations when planning your trip, you can use the route as a practical reference point. Its theme differs from that of Cabeça’s historic buildings, where ecclesiastical roles, imagery and construction take centre stage.
Churches: history and features
The Igreja de São Romão was Cabeça’s parish church until the Igreja da Divina Pastora was built in 1950. The year marks the construction of the Igreja da Divina Pastora and the transition in the local ecclesiastical role; it does not refer to the construction of the Igreja de São Romão. The main altar of the Igreja São Romão features depictions of São Romão and the crucified Christ. The Capela Nossa Senhora da Nazaré dates from 1900. These details provide distinct points of comparison between the churches: the chapel’s year of construction, São Romão’s former role as parish church and the imagery on its main altar.
The Ponte do Porto
At the edge of Cabeça, the Ponte do Porto crosses the Ribeira das Forcadas. It was built of slate masonry with a single semicircular arch. The slate masonry identifies the building material, while the arch is its defining form. Unlike the churches, the bridge is a structure over a watercourse; its location and construction can be considered together. For travellers interested in architecture as well as religious buildings, it offers a distinct point of interest.
Cabeça Aldeia Natal
For Cabeça Aldeia Natal, the local community decorates the village with natural and recycled materials. At night, thousands of LED lights illuminate the village. During the event, homes open for a Christmas market featuring local products. The decorations, lighting and market give the event different facets: the community transforms the village, the lights brighten the night, and the market brings local products into the open homes. As a seasonal occasion, Cabeça Aldeia Natal differs from the landscape-focused PR3. If this event is the reason for your trip, check the event dates in advance.
