River route and mountain country
The 15.6-kilometre Rota do Rio Seia connects the villages of Santiago, Folgosa do Salvador, Santa Comba, Sameice and Pereiro, which have historical ties to the river. It starts in the centre of Seia, can be completed on foot or by bicycle, and ends in Vila Verde. This single route therefore passes through several places whose history is connected with the Rio Seia.
For a broader landscape, the municipality of Seia lies on the western slope of the Serra da Estrela massif. It encompasses 26 percent of the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela and extends to the Torre, the highest point of the massif. Mountains, valleys, plateaus and lowlands create varied landscapes. The mountain region is therefore not limited to a single type of terrain.
Trail network, lake and waterways
The Caminhos de Montanha offer a different way to explore the area from the single Rota do Rio Seia: in the Seia area, the network includes approximately 100 kilometres of hiking trails and 150 kilometres of cycling routes with varying elevation profiles. These totals may change as the network evolves, so check the latest route information before setting out.
By contrast, the Caminhos dos Conchos circular route has a clearly defined start and end point: it begins and ends at Lagoa Comprida, next to the sales kiosk. Lagoa Comprida is the largest lake in the Serra da Estrela highlands and the massif’s main water reservoir. The circular route can therefore also be combined with a look at the lake’s importance to the massif.
Praia Fluvial da Lapa dos Dinheiros offers clear bathing water and holds an award recognising it as an accessible beach; seasonal facilities may vary. From there, a footpath leads to Buraco da Moura and a viewpoint overlooking the Caniça waterfalls. Praia Fluvial de Loriga, meanwhile, lies in a glacial valley formed by the glacier that shaped Vale de Loriga. The two places thus represent different aspects of the water landscape: bathing waters and waterfalls on the one hand, and the glacial formation of a valley on the other.
Experience and understand nature
CISE presents the fauna, flora and geology of the Serra da Estrela in an interactive permanent exhibition and through virtual reality. Its offerings also include hiking routes, snowshoe walks and birdwatching for those interested in wildlife. The programme may vary by season. Those interested in nature can therefore find both an exhibition perspective and activities focused on the landscape and wildlife.
Other museums each have their own focus: Museu do Brinquedo de Seia displays around 10,000 toys from Portugal and around the world. Museu do Pão offers a multisensory experience exploring Portugal’s bread heritage. Museu Natural da Eletricidade de Seia is housed in the former Central da Senhora do Desterro, considered one of Portugal’s oldest hydroelectric power plants. Guided tours and trails through Mata do Desterro are among the museum’s educational offerings.
Layers of history and local work
The cultural sites also take visitors through different periods of history. Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Desterro comprises ten chapels dedicated to scenes from the life and Passion of Christ and the mysteries of the Rosary. The original building of Capela de São Pedro is believed to date from the late 12th or early 13th century; in 1542, the chapel was rebuilt by order of Aires Botelho. Construction of the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Desterro began in the mid-17th century.
Castro de São Romão is a settlement dating from the Late Bronze Age, associated with the Baiões/Santa Luzia cultural group. Centro Interpretativo de Seia is located in an extension of Solar dos Botelhos, a 16th-century Manueline building. At Centro Interpretativo da Ovelha Serra da Estrela, a sensory interpretation spread across three floors explores subjects ranging from wool and milk to pastureland and shepherding. The building dates from the 18th century and formerly served as the town hall, a prison and a court.
Rotas da Eletricidade explores local industry through group visits to businesses producing wool and textiles and working in dairy processing and tanning. These industries have shaped the centuries-old industrial heritage of Seia and the Serra da Estrela. A visit to LacticĂnios Correia & Barreiras in Santa Eulália may include a tasting of the cheeses made there. Mountain specialities in the Seia area include Queijo Serra da Estrela, RequeijĂŁo de Seia and Bolo Negro de Loriga.
