Mangualde da Serra lies on the slopes of the Serra da Estrela. Agricultural terraces shape the hillside; they are planted with olive groves or bordered by them. Together, the hillside setting and terraces give the landscape a distinctly agricultural character. In the village, these features are joined by religious heritage and walking trails. When planning a trip, visitors can therefore choose different focuses, from local history and viewpoints to a longer hike.
Hillside Setting and Landscape
The agricultural terraces around Mangualde da Serra are planted with olive groves or bordered by them. The hillside is therefore not only part of its setting on the Serra da Estrela, but is also shaped by its agricultural use. Another distinctive feature in the area is Mondeguinho, where the source of the largest river that flows entirely within Portugal is located.
The ARU covers almost the entire urban area of Mangualde da Serra and is fully integrated into the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela. It covers 39.5 hectares; according to the 2011 Census, it had a population of 155.
Senhora do Monte: Views and Tradition
Senhora do Monte is a local tourist attraction in Mangualde da Serra and also a far-reaching viewpoint. From there, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Three centuries-old oak trees stand at Senhora do Monte, which also has a chapel. Thus, a named viewpoint brings together landscape views, ancient trees and a religious building.
Local traditions are also associated with Senhora do Monte. According to a legend, an image of the Virgin repeatedly returned to this place after it had been taken to the parish church. Senhora do Monte is also associated with an annual pilgrimage; according to tradition, the local population began making the pilgrimage there year after year. The two stories offer different insights into the significance of the place: one is about the image, the other about the recurring pilgrimage.
Religious Heritage and Local History
The religious architecture of Mangualde da Serra includes the Igreja Matriz de São Vicente and the Capela Mortuária de S. Domingos. Both are part of the village's religious architectural heritage. Together with the chapel at Senhora do Monte, they provide several specific points of reference for its religious heritage, without implying a set itinerary.
Mangualde da Serra was founded before the Inquirições de D. Afonso III of 1258. Its building style also shapes the local character: Mangualde da Serra has granite buildings typical of this mountain region. The local economy once included families growing maize, rye and potatoes. The village's history thus encompasses early evidence of settlement and religious architecture, as well as historical agriculture.
Walking Trails and Getting Around
The Rota dos Caminhos da FĂ© is a 16 km circular walking trail. It follows old paths through the rural landscape on the middle slopes. When planning, both the trail's length and circular route, as well as the landscape described, are relevant. The PR 2 GVA Caminhos da FĂ© walking trail passes through Mangualde da Serra.
Local connections can also be described precisely: the municipal road EM522-1 connects Mangualde da Serra with Moimenta da Serra, Alrote, Eiras and São Cosmado. Mangualde da Serra also offers a privileged view of Cabeça do Velho, a rock formation at an altitude of 1,500 metres. The reservoir and Vale do Rossim river beach are nearby. The landscape features therefore range from views of the rock formation to the hillside terraces and the destinations mentioned in the surrounding area.
