Cativelos on the Mondego

Cativelos lies on the left bank of the Mondego. When choosing a place to stay, Cativelos offers several clearly distinct points of reference: its riverside location, buildings in the central axis area of old Cativelos, and nature trails in Parque da Senhora dos Verdes.

The settlement is served directly by the EN232, which runs east–west, and the EM501, which runs north–south. Together with the left bank of the Mondego, these features provide concrete reference points when choosing a location for your stay in Cativelos.

History and Buildings

One historical point of reference is the charter: Cativelos received it from King Manuel on 1 May 1513. This makes the town’s history tangible not only through its buildings; the dated legal act provides a separate point of reference alongside the architecture.

The Igreja Paroquial de Cativelos, also called Igreja de SĂŁo SebastiĂŁo, is a Baroque building in the central axis area of old Cativelos. The Capela de Santo AntĂłnio is also located there and is likewise Baroque. The two buildings share their style and location; their names and the designations parish church and chapel distinguish them.

Ponte das Cantinas adds an archaeological bridge of Roman type to this group. It has a single arch made of granite masonry. The buildings are therefore distinguished by different features: the Baroque style of the church and chapel, and the bridge’s type, arch shape and material.

Nature and Trails

Among Cativelos’ natural and water-related attractions is Piscina da Ribeira da Acessada, considered a site of special tourist interest. Parque da Senhora dos Verdes is located in the Cativelos parish in the municipality of Gouveia. The park includes several kilometres of nature trails, where a wide range of activities and sports can be enjoyed. The specific activities on offer may vary depending on the operator.

The area figures for the Parque distinguish 22 hectares of fenced, developed land from a further 120 hectares of natural terrain. These are two different types of area: the fenced and developed land, and the additional natural terrain. The additional natural terrain is more than five times the size of the fenced, developed area.

Annual Festivals

A regional article from September 2023 lists the following recurring festival dates in Cativelos: SĂŁo SebastiĂŁo on 20 January, SĂŁo Marcos on 25 April, Rainha Santa on the last Sunday in July, and Senhora dos Verdes on 15 August. Three celebrations fall on fixed calendar dates; the date for Rainha Santa depends on the day of the week in July. If you plan your trip around one of these festivals, confirm the dates locally in advance.
